William CARLIN Obituary

Carlin, William Francis (Bill). Passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, in Auckland, New Zealand, at the age of 76, with his family by his side. Born in London, Ontario, to the late Leo and Rita Carlin, Bill moved to New Zealand in his early twenties, where he built a life defined by his love for the land. A graduate of University of Western Ontario and the University of Canterbury, Bill dedicated his career to the Department of Conservation. He was a passionate rugby player, a world traveller, and a man of fierce loyalty and convictions. In retirement, Bill divided his time between Auckland and living his dream "off-grid" on Great Barrier Island with his wife, June, where he worked tirelessly to restore native forests. He was a man who truly loved his work and the environment he sought to protect. He was convinced 'If we don't take care of nature, nature will not take care of us'. Beloved husband of June Brookes and devoted father of Lisa. Dear brother of John, Mark and Robert. Predeceased by his brothers Barry and Doug. He will be deeply missed by his many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends in both Canada and New Zealand. There will be a memorial honouring Bill's life in March. Please contact the family for more information. "Once a friend, a friend forever."

Bill was a great and true friend to me while working for conservation in NZ and beyond, although in truth he was more a fiend of conservation than anyone else. Rest now BC. Thanks. Respect you always.

I first met Bill during the halcyon flatting days in Wellington in the 70´s, after he had adopted NZ as his new homeland. We remained close friends, for the next 51 years.
His love and `hands on´ knowledge, of the NZ flora and fauna was legendary, educational and always entertaining.
He tramped and travelled all over NZ´s `great outdoors´ and Conservation Estate. And used his passion to pioneer, protect, and promote our unique environment.
A lifelong learner. A full life of many experiences.
After a difficult last few years ... RIP Bill ... you will be sorely missed.
Sending caring thoughts to June & Lisa
From Phil Morris, Lynda and family (and on behalf of the `troops´)

Bill encouraged me as a student and I later had the privilege of working with him as a colleague. A wise and caring man - my condolences to June and family.

So saddened to hear of Bill's passing. Last saw him on Great Barrier a few years ago. As Conservator Southland I loved my times with him,his intellect , his humour , his passion for conservation. I feel truly privileged to have known him and worked alongside him. As DG of DOC from 2013 to 2021 his legacy was everywhere in the old Whsnganui Region. His pragmatic solution to the Kaimanawa wild horses controversy, his impact on the Whanganui River Settlement , the DOC Office and staff. He leaves a huge legacy. Lou Sanson

CARLIN, William (Bill). Left us on 7 January 2026. He will be missed by a wide community of people in the fields of environmental protection and conservation. A man of strong intellect and progressive ideals, he was a very good stalwart friend. Born in Canada, he rapidly became a true kiwi. We will miss his ability to discuss a wide range of topics and his recommendations on thought provoking literature. All our sympathy to June and Lisa. Peter and Heather.
