Lee was a force of nature and a true inspiration. Twenty years ago, she opened her heart and her home to me when I arrived from Sweden as a young exchange student. She welcomed me into her family with a level of kindness and inclusion that shaped the person I am today.
Beyond her many professional achievements as an entrepreneur and leader, she was a remarkable mother and matriarch whose heart was big enough to include me as well. I will always carry her warmth with me. Rest in peace, Lee.

E te Mareikura tena hoki koe. Moe mai ra i tou moengaroa. Hoki atu ki o Whanau o Iwi ki to tatou Matua I Te Rangi.
From The Whanau Ora Community Clinic, we remember Dr Lee Mathias for her support of Maori providers and her belief in community-led solutions. Her encouragement helped open doors and strengthen pathways for whanau.
Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
Moe mai ra.

My sincere condolences to Lee´s family. I considered you a friend throughout my whole school life in Rotorua. I enjoyed years of playing netball with you at Glenholme primary school and then of course your Eagles Saturday team. We both went nursing at the same time but I went to Waikato while you went to Auckland. Years later we met up again at what was then Auckland Birth Centre. I have continued to watch your career since then and admired your innovation and resilience. My thoughts are with you all. I am grateful to have known Lee.

Dear Lee, not only did we grow up together I also had the privilege of being a good friend during your days of Middlemore, Greenlane,Newmarket, Remuera . You never stopped striving to better the health system for the good of especially women. A very sad day for us all as we have lost a star that will always shine bright over Auckland. RIP.
