Condolences to Wally's family.

As a school friend of Leora's, I spent time at the Hirsh's house in Strathmore.

I remember Wally and Adele being so welcoming and I was often invited to stay for dinner on a Friday night.

A beautiful family and I have lovely memories.

Rest in peace.

I remember Mr Hirsh primarily as an educator with a passion for ensuring that cultural diversity was embraced, respected and celebrated in New Zealand schools. My mum and dad were teachers and often spoke of Mr Hirsh when we were growing up and his family also put up with me tagging along to band practices at their Wellington home as well hosting my brother who played bass in the band with their eldest son. I have fond memories of those times and the Hirsh's kids and wish all of Mr Hirsh's family to consolation of knowing what a huge contribution Mr Hirsh made to the integral weave of life in Aotearoa. I can imagine how difficult this time must be for them all and hope Mr Hirsh's legacy goes some way to giving them consolation at a time of grief and loss.

I worked with Wally at Mount Cook School in Wellington as a young teacher. His vision for the multicultural students and for those who had significant underprivileged backgrounds was inspiring. His aim was to help his school to provide the richness that his students warranted. His family experiences in Nazi Germany gave him a rich depth of humanity and an underlying sadness that wider family members had not believed what his parents saw coming for the Jewish community. Wally was deeply troubled by what he saw in the extremes of New Zealand society when Race Relations Conciliator. In all things, he was a man of great integrity, of rich cultural depth and of concern for his fellow human beings. Rest easy, Wally, you have fought the good fight.
My condolences to Adele and his family. He treasured you
and his Jewish community.
