I had the privilege of working with Vivienne at the University of Waikato in the Department of Biological Sciences with her thousands of diatom slides; she was so right...beautiful little creatures. I enjoyed her company and had the pleasure of visiting her at her home for afternoon tea. An amazing woman - I feel very lucky to have known her.
With the current loss of news this past while - I sadly didn't see Vivienne's obituary until today on Stuff, but I would like to still offer my sincerest condolences to her family.

Dear Rachel, Steven, Matthew, Erica, Peter, Maddie, and friends,
On behalf of Alumni relations and development and the Faculty of Science at The University of Auckland, we express our condolences at the passing of our dear friend and inspirational marine biologist Dr Vivienne Cassie Cooper MNZM.
Since completing her formative studies with a doctorate from our university in 1955, Vivienne's significant and enduring contributions to her alma mater as a distinguished member of academic staff, mentor, donor, and event guest has been highly valued by student's, colleagues and fellow alumni of the university. It was an honour to have The Vivienne Cassie Cooper Institute of Marine Science as part of our 125-year suffrage women in science event.
Having personally had the pleasure of Vivienne's company here on campus and at her Hamilton home, I feel a deep sense of privilege to have experienced Vivienne's warm modesty and academic selflessness as she recalled experiences in advancing our understanding of algae in New Zealand, their life history, ecology, physiology, anatomy and genetics. Through the Vivienne Cassie Cooper Prize in Marine Biology, vivienne's legacy will live on.
The University of Auckland community wish you strength and health as you remember and celebrate Vivienne's extraordinary life.

Our deepest sympathy to Vivienne's family from all her friends and colleagues at Rebus Hamilton. Vivienne was a much respected founding member of Probus Hamilton, now Rebus Hamilton. We hope all the memories you have will help to sustain you at this sad time x
