It is with a sad heart that I took in the somber words that I have just read about the loss of such an amazing man. I like many before, and no doubt after me, were profoundly touched by this gentle soul. When I needed help, when going through a difficult time, he was there for me. His gentle and positive influence have stayed with me all these years (I was one of his many students in the 80's at Wainuiomata College). I recently graduated with a Degree at 52 and earnt a First Class Honours classification, from a good University in the UK. As I clutched my graduation scroll in my hand, in December last year (2018), I thought of Mr Langley. I promised myself I would return home to NZ and I would show him that this Wainui girl eventually did good far from home.
That the time he spent with me filling my head with ideas about tertiary education was not wasted. Him and I often chatted about my ambitions to go to Uni. I sincerely doubt that I would have done so, without the lovely memory of his whispering voice of encouragement, which is still in my head to this day. I am deeply saddened that I am too late to share my thanks with him. But, I hope that his family may know that even half way around the globe his loss is still keenly felt. I guess we won't be celebrating together huh, Mr Langley, well, not yet, not yet.

I attended Mr Langley's funeral today and I'm so glad I did. I was greeted warmly by his son and daughter, and I was fortunate to bump into former school mate Terence Hibbert who I sat next to during the service. Some lovely words were spoken by members of all of Mr Langley's communities: educators, family, friends and Kiwanis. Terence gave a moving speech, describing how this lovely man changed the course of his life. He then led a waiata. Mr Langley clearly touched many people's lives. I knew him only as my principal, but he was so much more. May he rest in peace.

Ka hinga te Totara i te wao nui a Tne - The Totara tree in Tane's great forest has fallen.
It was sad to hear of the passing of such a great Principal and Teacher, that shaped and prepared many of us Wainuiomatians for life after college and the big wide world over the hill.
Unlike other teachers, I found his style gentle, collaborative and supportive.
I liked Mr Langley and respected him very much.
My heartfelt condolences to Mr Langley's family and friends.
Moe mai r e te Rangitira - Rest In Peace our esteemed Principal

He was the Principal of Wainuiomata College during the years I was there, 1979-1982. I have memories of a warm and friendly man who easily gained the respect of teenagers. Never forgotten. My sincere sympathies to his family. RIP.
