Remembering my first job as Auckland Star Advertising Trainee in 1963 with a passion for photography. Joined photo team by arrangement on Saturdays for assignment experience including tagging along variously with Tong Wong, Leon Hamlet and Laurie Thomas.
Many years ago, but still recall being impressed by the quiet professionalism and remarkable photographic talent shown by Tong Wong.
Such experience was to motivate my lifetime personal involvement in photography albeit as an enthusiastic amateur.

Tong was a senior photographer at the Auckland Star when I joined as a cadet reporter in the early 1960s. He was admired and respected for his outstanding photography and professionalism, and well-liked by all his colleagues for his kind, modest personality and his helpfulness to young reporters fortunate enough to be sent out on assignments with him. My condolences to Tong's family; you must be sad but so proud.

WONG, Tong. Passed away at the grand age of 93. Not one to play by the rules, Dad forged his own path choosing photography over stepping into the family business. An explorer to the end, his curiosity had him pursuing interests as varied as art and geopolitics, design and cultural icons. He amassed a wealth of knowledge making him a formidable challenger when watching The Chase on tv. His talents however weren't limited to general knowledge and photojournalism; he was a master at ironing and to this day, I enjoy a freshly pressed outfit thanks to Dad. Usually a man of few words, he became animated and excited when we'd chat be it about art or politics, design or New York. I'll miss our chats, his laughter and smiles, and cooking his favourite meals. The greatest compliment I received from him was a hearty "mighty" as he tucked in to dinner giving me a big thumbs-up. Dad... you and Mum will always be my inspiration. I miss you both deeply. Jan.
