Rest in peace Mr Tommy Doyle. I vividly remember the times you would be at Webbs Auctions, looking for more items to add to your collection. What a presence you had.

Crossing the Bar
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
Sail free Tommy.

I never walk past the bench on the corner of Garnet and Lemington Roads without thinking of Tommy. It´ll always be your spot Tommy. Fare thee well.

I have fond memories of Tommy whether he was sitting up at the shops, visiting the Auction house and also showing me his house plus his teapot collection. His bedroom was like something out of a museum showcase. Rest in peace

Once in a while, if you are fortunate, a unique individual arrives on your doorstep. Such an event happened to three, somewhat impressionable, young women who worked together in an airline office in Downtown Auckland, back in the 1970s.
A wild looking man of indeterminate age, with a smile in his eye and who always had something of interest to share with the girls of Number 10 Queen St. We were quite naive and coupled with his broad Irish accent, often had no idea what he was talking about!. Had our parents known of his regular visits to our workplace, our Mother's would've perhaps cautioned us about befriending such a man - an Irishman who most surely had touched the blarneystone; much older than us, with a twinkle in his eye, and full of such information that would've curled our collective Mothers hair to be sure! But it was all harmless. Simply put, we
were on Tommy's list of free coffees in the Downtown precinct. And not to put a fine point on it, supposedly the best coffee he ever tasted. I told you he'd touched the blarney stone!
We awaited his daily visits, and missed him when he did leave port. Often he'd take to Rarotonga something my Father needed on the island.
A truer friend, you could not find.
And so it is with much sadness that Irish has departed our lives, coupled with much pleasure of having been a friend of his.
Rest in peace dear friend. Catch up with you again in Heaven.
Love from the girls at Number 10 Queen Street.
