I knew Peter when we were both lawyers in Christchurch. He was a referee for me when I was appointed to the bench in Samoa (1979-81). I respected his wise counsel in my own career. He always had my full respect.

My thoughts go to those who will remember Mr Penlington with love. In the 1970's Mr and Mrs Penlington and their daughter, Anna, cared for me when my family couldn't. I have always felt grateful.

So sad to read this. I had the absolute honour of working with Peter as Judge's Associate when he was on the High Court Bench in Hamilton. A true gentleman with the utmost integrity, who treated everyone with fairness, kindness and compassion. A life well lived. My sincere condolences to Jill and family - he will be greatly missed.

My sympathy goes to Jill and Susan and family on the loss of Peter. My memory goes back to 1940's /50's when we visited our respective grandparents at Aikmans Road. Peter certainly achieved so much respect in his life as a family member and in his profession.

To the Penkington family. Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences at the sad loss of Peter. It was a pleasure and honour to be associated with Peter in a great working relationship over more than 40 years when he was in practice in Christchurch and I was a Court Officer, and later to serve him on his appointment to the High Court bench. A real gentleman with an impressive attention to detail in his work. A sad loss who will always be remembered. Peter Fantham , reitired Registrar.

A fine gentleman and meticulous Judge will be remembered with respect and gratitude by all but perhaps especially by the Hamilton legal profession and those of us who as counsel had the privilege of appearing before
