Terence DUNLEAVY Obituary

DUNLEAVY, Terence John (Terry) MBE, JP. Peacefully at home on 14 March 2022. Dearly beloved husband of Margaret; much loved father of Mike, Erin, John, Paul, Teuila, Trisha, Anna, Tessa, Terry, Clare and Hera and father-in- law to their partners; much loved grandfather of Sophie, Sarah, Sam, Tom, Rory, Jessica, Finnbarr, Isabella, Liam, Trees, Krissie, Harley, Johnny, Millie, Henry, Ciaran, Michael, William and Miro; and much loved great-grandfather of Ruby, Roan, Liam, Charley, Olive and Mali. Adored brother of Trish, Michael (Brother Richard) and Kerry and the wider Dunleavy whanau. Proud of his Irish and kiwi roots, Terry was also a deeply loved, adopted son within a broad aiga in Samoa, a country he loved as his own. Terry's devotion to family went much wider and he was also a significant and passionate contributor in numerous aspects of NZ life, leading to him be appointed MBE in 1990. Foremost among these was wine: he was a foundational pillar of our thriving New Zealand wine industry, and a much loved father figure, mentor and adviser across his wider wine family. This was recognized by his appointment in 1996 as a Fellow of the Wine Institute of New Zealand. In rugby, he had a variety of roles across the rugby community, particularly with the Marist clubs in Wellington, Hawkes Bay and Auckland. A lifelong devoted Roman Catholic, Terry was a committed servant to society, whether as a passionate advocate within local and national politics, as a Justice of the Peace, or in active support of local church and community services such as his board work with Hato Petera (which made him an honorary old boy) and North Shore Hospice. A Requiem Mass for Terry and celebration of his life will take place at St Joseph's Church, Taharoto Road (entrance 10 Dominion Street), Takapuna at 11.00am on Friday, 18th March. Due to current circumstances, please register your intention to attend by email to [email protected] or request the livestream link. Vaccine pass required.

On behalf of the ASB Showgrounds, I would like to pass on my dearest condolences to the Dunleavy family. Terry was a pillar and the key to the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards for many many years (well before my time). I had the pleasure of working with him on the 2019 RESWA held at the Pullman. Terry was such a brilliant, passionate and caring man. My memories working with him are fond, and I will never forget how well he worked with technology. His Apple iPhone and iMac laptop - he had it all, even people half his age couldn't use technology like he could. I have included a picture of the 2019 RESWA and a photo with Emma whom he knew for many years while she worked at the Showgrounds. Terry will be missed. Sending love to the family.

Dearest Margaret and the Dunleavy family. Heartfelt sympathy to each and all of you. I deeply regret that I am not able to attend Terry's funeral service, I wish for you all on this day good and happy memories.

Terry's passing has stired a number of memories and what is now very clear to me is that the steadfast loyalty and patience's of Margaret for Terry is an example to us all. I'm certain that Terry would agree, that Margaret's love and support was the key that unlocked his potential for the greater benefit of so many.

For me, working alongside Terry as the Inaugural Chair of the Exporter Committee was eye watering. Watching him access and organise our former Prime Ministers, Government Ministers, what was then called NZTrade and Industry Officials, international and domestic wine organisations, media, authors, and influencers, infact anyone who would listen, was impressive.
Perhaps most impressive was his succeeding to bring to NZ important "influences of the day" like (UK) Jancis Robertson, (USA) Robert Parker to taste, experience and write about our wines in our vineyards and wine cellars. For those who worked with Terry in those formative years we can all agree I'm sure, that he was not the "easiest" to keep up with, but his compass was always set to success, and Terry's contribution will forever be a solid cornerstone of the foundation that is the global success story of the NZ Wine Industry todate.
Terry, it's time to rest. Pocivao u miru.

I began working for you on 6 October 1980 and by the end of that week, I was ready to escape. I didn't, as I began to recognise the teddy bear deep inside you and became hooked by you and the Wine Institute. A smile comes to my face when I reflect on the years you, Philip and I spent working together. Rest In Peace Terry.
