Your contribution to family and service to Maniapoto Iwi will be sadly missed.
Since the news came via the internet to Ottawa in Canada I have had time to reflect on your parents and the large family of Josephs. I have been proud to call my Cousins from Te Ruitoto, to the youngest Hine, who lived in Australia and the many siblings in between.
When your brother Ray passed several years ago I had a large Kohatu (stone carving) done in his memory and your brothers Pat, John, Tui, Jim and Rehe I knew well growing up in Te Kuiti. jim and I were born the same year and month in 1939.
Having been in Canada now 16 years, I am wondering if Ruitoto, Rehe and Hine are still battling on like me along with cousins Tererenga and Tuti Wetere both in their 90's. My Aunty Monti and Uncle George must be impressed with their family that might also include a Prime Minister and an All Blacks Coach in the future.
Marcia and I hold dear the times we had together especially on our last visit to NZ. Thank you for sharing the many accounts you have over the years about the whanau and for supporting me in doing the work I did, like you, to make the lives of our people better.
Marcia wanted me to add also that you were absolutely one of her "favourite" relations and she thanks you for the kindness and aroha you always showed her.
Though we were able to come home for Cousin Koro's tangihana, Marcia and I are unable to be with you and the whanau at this important time...but we are with all of you in Spirit.
Aroha mai ki te whanau
