Stephen MCKEAN Obituary

McKEAN, Stephen Ronald (Coach). Our larger-than-life husband and father passed away on Monday 3rd May, 2021. Best friend, confidante and adored husband of Rachel. Inspiration, biggest champion and constant teacher to daughter, Naomi, and warm and welcoming story-teller to Greg. He leaves a huge hole in our hearts and our lives. We are extremely grateful to Steve's many friends who have supported him and us over this short but difficult journey. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Coach's name to Sport Taranaki's 'Future Champions' Programme, via direct deposit to Taranaki Sports Trust, account: 15-3953-0398058-81. We invite all to Coach's final celebration. Tip-off at 10.30 am Monday 10th May, 2021 at the TSB Stadium, New Plymouth. Please stay to raise a glass to Coach afterwards, at the same venue.

To Rachel, Naomi and family.
We are so sorry to hear about Steve's passing. He was a larger than life man who always lit up a room and you would hear him before you saw him. My husband Steve and myself got to know him back in 1997 when we arrived at Opunake High School as PE teachers from the UK. His encouragement and passion for sports and students has never wavered since and I am going to miss my catch up Hot chocolates with him. Our daughter Hope was chosen by Steve into the future champions programme. His guidance and support have enabled her to become a Black stick. Learning the tools of being a professional athlete. Our youngest daughter also went through this programme. This vision from him to guide young athletes at a young age has had a significant impact on our young sports people within the region.
He has been a big influence on our family and we will miss him. Sending lots of love at this time. Karla, Steve, Hope and India Ralph xxxx

Sadley with a heavy heart I will not be able to make Steve's last team talk, him yelling from the bench, the huge smile from the win, and what was so special the get together with the team and family at the pub for the celerbration drinks.

Warm healing loving hugs beautiful family.
RIP Steve.

To Rachel and Naomi
The Bomber a unique and inspirational human being who has left us all the poorer for his passing. Be proud of the person he was and of his contributions to the communities in Auckland and New Plymouth in which he chose to live and work. He was a one-off who touched so many lives and leaves so many of us devastated by his untimely departure..
Love to you both and salutes to the man.

Dear Rachel
Such a huge shock to read of Steve's passing in The Press this morning as I had no idea Steve had been ill. I remember him very fondly and Peter was a huge fan of his. They had some great times. It will be lonely and sad for you for a long time. So many memories. Love Sandra

Dearest Rachel & Naomi

Such heartbreak for you on the sad loss of Steve - Your Top Man Words are just so inadequate to describe how devastating this is for you both - the love, respect and admiration the three of you shared was a joy to see and know - so precious. That has not gone and will remain a beautiful memory for eternity.

Steve was simply the Best of the Best - compassionate, caring, dedicated, passionate, driven and loving in every part of his life. You have shared him unselfishly with so many people - they will all be walking beside you now - holding and helping you as you walk this journey. So many of us are privileged that we can do this for you.

Our dear Lord has a special mission for Steve - he is free of his pain and suffering now. Steve will still be beside you every minute of every hour and your memories of your Top Man will be with you forever.

Rest in Love Steve and rest easy.

Rachel and Naomi - love you to the moon and back There is a new star shining brightly watching over you both.
Big hugs dear friends
