Auckland Art Gallery Volunteer Guides

Stephanie entered the Volunteer Guides program with us in September 2023. She guided consistently in the Gallery, most notably for the Guo Pei: Art, Fashion, Fantasy exhibition which ran for five months. As a textile artist, Stephanie was ideally placed to work with our visitors on this show and it was a particular pleasure for her to be involved.
Stephanie was keen to take on unusual tours: she enjoyed after hours visitors, Gallery Late Night events and special events for our Partners & Sponsors. She worked with our Blind and Low Vision visitors and our Deaf Tour lead in preparation for an NZSL tour. She was open to learning, gentle, and had a quiet authority that created a feeling of safety for visitors who are not our traditional audiences.
Stephanie was a great contributor in the Guides´ group, sharing her experience, art knowledge, and creative ideas. She was liked, admired and appreciated by her colleagues and she is missed. Our sadness is also that she did not get to fulfil the wonderful guiding career that she was so much enjoying.

Stephanie was a cherished member of our Stitch Group, she was not only a talented artist / embroiderer but also a beacon of creativity and an inspiration to us all. Each piece she created was a testament to her dedication, passion and artistry making our Stitch Group proud to celebrate her achievements.
Stephanie will be greatly missed, she had a deep love for her family and was very proud of her children Danielle, Gene and her grandchildren.
Stephanie your creativity and love will be with us always.

I met Stephanie in the late 70's when she moved to Auckland literally at a stitch evening. Our shared interest in arts of every genre meant there was never a shortage of things to do, galleries to visit, movies to see, food to eat, books to share and travel to embark on. Stephanie was a friend extraordinaire going above and beyond in thoughtfulness, quiet support and even the smiling rebuke that my family will never forget when once I was waxing lyrical when Stephanie chimed in 'details Robyn, too many details', they said only a friend of 50 years could say that.
Stephanie's eclectic taste was always evident in the unusual decor she chose in all the homes she owned. Her eye for Art Deco furniture and ornaments sat just as comfortably with her 21st century original art that she was assiduously gathering; each new piece sitting well with the existing ones.
Stephanie my friend I already miss you, I may never be able to go to the Bridgeway or Clarence Road eatery again. You were to me the sister I never had - even though you had three of your own. Rest in peace. Robyn Tubb

I met Stephanie through embroidery and she was a constant inspiration.
Not just in her work with fabric and thread or her amazing clothes. Her quiet wit and humour made her great company as well.
I will really miss her.

You can´t buy a friendship of more than 50 years. Nor can you replace it. I have the memories. I also have a hole in my heart and a void in my life. Goodbye my wonderful friend
