Sorry to hear of the passing of this great man, Sir Colin. My understanding is he was my cousin through my late father Bruce James Maiden. I met Colin at his home where we played tennis and at the University. I share my name with his son, Mark Maiden, which I am extremely proud of. Sir Colin was compassionate, kind and very clever, a wise and caring man, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He led the University for nearly a quarter of a century during which time it underwent a massive increase in size, calling on his skills. His interest in the goings on extended to a brisk walk around the campus many lunchtimes, meeting a range of members of the University as he progressed. His encouragement of his staff to excel, as well as trust in them, was available for all including those from the wopwops of east Taranaki. Thank you, Colin.

I remember Colin, my cousin, mother's side, most affectionately for the 6 inches of the "Champion" comic magazine he sent me to help me get through a long childhood hospitalisation, something he had also experienced. And my envy of his operating bulldozers in his compulsory military training, when all I could do was handle explosives. He was much better than me in the workshop at Epsom too. Farewell, Colin. My parents and I lived alongside Colin and Jenefor at our Holiday house in Waipiro bay for 50 years, they were wonderful neighbours and friends and we spent many hours over dinner, drinks, and conversation on so many occasions. Colin and Jenefor will always be remembered with love in our Bay.

Our condolences to all of the family.

Sincerely,
John Steane, and family.

Sir Colin made significant contributions to the game of tennis in the City of Auckland.
He was a member of the International Club and a passionate player for over 80 years.
He will be missed by all who knew him and I will always think of him during my regular drives past Colin Maiden Park.

Sir Colin Maiden was an inspiration to me during both my time as a student at the University of Auckland and as a member of the Faculty there.

I was fortunate to get to know him personally when I was young and play tennis with him on the University Faculty Tennis Team where he was a foundational member for many years. It is appropriate that Colin Maiden Park is so close to the Tennis Centre since he was an avid athlete, supporting participation in sport and tennis was his favourite. I often think of him as I pass the Park.

As the Vice Chancellor of the University of Auckland and the longest serving VC in the Commonwealth, he made a point of attending all the graduations as if he felt that the success of each graduate was his personal responsibility. I am sure that he clapped each and every graduand that walked across the stage during the years of his tenure - three claps each - no more no less. It was his way of wishing them well with their future after having graduated from his beloved University.

He kept a collegial atmosphere at the University of Auckland as it grew in size, and I felt there was always a way to make myself heard. He supported a meritocratic institution representing the ideal of creative work and learning and respecting the rights of all students to quality learning and of all faculty to a fair work environment.

I am fortunate to have known a man of his stature, commitment to service, intellect and love, and have taken on many of his qualities in my own life to make a difference to people.

My love and sincere supportive wishes go to his family. His time on Earth was valuable and made a positive difference to many!

Go well Sir Colin. You are remembered with respect, gratitude and love.

Thank you from Pete Mazany

Almost 40 years of sharing Waipiro Bay as neighbours. Sadly, with the loss of both Jenefor & Colin we will feel a big hole in our Waipiro lives. We enjoyed our recent get togethers for pre dinner drinks & will always have lovely memories.
We are currently overseas & can only express our condolences to the family from here in Savusavu, Fiji. Bryn & Sue

Sir Colin was instrumental in bringing me to NZ and the University in 1986 and later he was my line manager as Dean of Science and Head of Chemistry. In due course I served as PVC Tamaki during its Innovation Campus phase. I had the greatest respect and admiration for Colin as a University VC and academic leader. May he rest in peace.
NB I will be overseas on the 19/8 and so sadly I will not be at the funeral service

Colin was Vice-Chancellor when I first joined the staff at the University of Auckland. He welcomed me warmly as a fellow Rhodes Scholar, and remained a supportive colleague, mentor and friend throughout his long career. Last I saw him he had just published a book and wanted to talk about his next projects as well as my own. He contributed so much to so many. A life well lived.
