Sir Barry sat next to me on the ARA in 1977.
I thought I knew everything, ha! he did know everything. He was always the student and also the teacher of responsible good governance.... doing things right and doing the right thing.
A great teacher and a superb local government role model.
Later, after ` many trips around the sun ` he would come to the Town Hall, always with a celebrity grand entrance, often unannounced, mostly late , but always welcome.
In meetings he could be noisy, larger than life ,but always thoughtful, homework done, agenda clear and determined, and always generous with praise and support .
A loyal friend, a man of the people, a Patriot.....
Now safely on the wings of Angels to Eternal glory .

Farewell Sir Barry, thank you for your kindness to my mother through many years and and also our family. We came to NZ from Northern Ireland and there were always many laughs. Your favorite saying to us was : " We Irish must stick together " and if I picked up the phone when you rang it was " Is that the Irish Colleen, how is the parrot (our Cockatoo) ? " RIP Sir Barry Curtis, you were an inspiration to all, your memory will always live on.

I worked with Sir Barrry from 1961 on community development, arts and local government projects until his retirement. He was constantly generous, inclusive, humane, tireless and inspirational to many of us.

Our sympathy goes out to all the Curtis family having known Barry since childhood, as our parents were closely connected. Barry was always there to help my parents and support and celebrate family achievements in many ways that was always appreciated. May he rest in peace. From the Kendall and Wallbridge families.

CURTIS, Sir Barry. We wish to convey our much sadness on the passing of Sir Barry Curtis and extend our sincere sympathy to his family. Sir Barry was a very good friend to us for many years. He dedicated his professional life to serving the communities of Manukau as Mayor and helping people in need. He had a strong belief in social justice and equity. It was a great pleasure for us to have been his friend and he will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace. From Colin, Billie and Family.
