Satish SHETTY Obituary

SHETTY, Satish. Passed away on 28th May 2019. Whatever the adverse circumstances of their birth, there are some people who cannot be held back from success. Satish Shetty was one of them. Born in Mumbai, India, on the 18th of September, 1956, Satish was the top-ranked student at his school but didn't go to university. Instead, he worked at his family restaurant and saved money to go to a country he felt he could leave his mark on. Satish knew how to get what he wanted and when, he saw a beautiful young girl in Mumbai airport he walked right up to her and asked her to marry him. He courted Nasrin and they were married happily for 26 years. They have a son, Hamish, and a daughter, Sonia and although Satish and Nasrin divorced, they remained close to the end of his life. In 1986, Satish and Nasrin arrived in NZ. They started with nothing and cleaned toilets to survive but before long saw the opportunity to create a chain of Indian take- away restaurants. By the time Satish passed away, he had opened over fifty food outlets in New Zealand, Australia and Dubai. Satish created opportunities for his employees to leave poverty and discover new worlds and his hard work and vision changed thousands of lives. No one gave Satish any head-starts in life. He was a self-made man and all he created he did from his own initiative, through tenacity and hard-work. His success must be saluted but there was more to him than that. Blessed with enormous powers of concentration, he sometimes seemed distant but was generous, loved sport and cooking for his friends and family. When he looked up from his computer screen, with a wide smile and bright eyes he expressed more than words could about the joy he found, and gave, in life. His Funeral Service will be held today at 1.30pm at the Chapel of Davis Funeral Services, 150 Central Park Drive, Henderson.

Never met Satish but knew him vicariously through Nasrin who often visited and cared for us and some other inmates of the care home we are in.Though long divorced Satish and Nasrin remained friends and she always spoke well of him. They both cared for their children Hamish and Sonia who by now are well settled in their respective professions. It is unfortunate that he could not attend the graduation ceremony of his daughter which was to take place on June 4.

May he rest in peace.

I worked for Sathish ji for 2 years at his New Lynn restaurant. He is a fatherly figure to me and owe part of my success in life directly to him. Tales of his past success and simple nature were inspiring lessons to me. I was fortunate to see and interact with real Satish ji behind tough looking veneer. He is a very kind hearted, quick to forgive, hard working, caring and friendly person.

To this day I vividly remember his words and voice at the time of my resignation, I left job abruptly due to personal circumstances. I felt remorseful many times for hurt I have caused but never had courage to go back and seek his forgiveness.

Sathish ji is true visionary and entrepreneur. Many of us owe him deep debt of gratitude for the support and jobs he gave us during tough times in life. God bless his children and family.

Satish Shetty was my class-mate from KG till SSC (Old SSC Mar 1975 batch. He was a very brilliant student and always used to stand first in our class.
Those days,in 1975 telephones were also rare. When we parted in 1975, we didn't have telephones hence we lost track of each other. Also, later he moved out of India. I recently came to know of his whereabouts but unfortunately couldn't contact him. His unexpected demise is quite shocking since I couldn't meet him recently, though we were close friends in school.
May God give the strength to Satish's family to pass this crisis situation.
Regards to Mohan Shetty and his family too.
Kindly accept our condolences on behalf of St Thomas Reunion group 1975 SSC(Old) Batch.
