Dr Fonseka was the very first consultant I worked with following graduation from medical school. I was very fortunate to work with him and learnt greatly about practising medicine with pragmatism and compassion. I have fond memories of the mandatory mid ward round tea breaks which were spent listening to his amusing stories he had accumulated over his medical career. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed. Sending condolences to his family.

I have many fond memories of ward rounds on Ward 58 with Sarath, and the stories he would tell. Of his Grand Round presentations, that were always scattered with jokes. And I am sure that he had all his trousers fitted with enormous pockets. He would reach in and pull out a stethoscope, or a tendon hammer, or anything else he needed to use for examining his patients.
He was a true gentleman, kind and giving.
One of the things I miss most is the giggle (often occurring during one of his stories).

Dear Sarath Ayya,
Your smile on the face never fade away from our memories. So many things you have done for Piliyandala family. I believe you are a "Stream Entree". Only few more births for you to end this Smasaric cycle.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Sarath Fonseka. First saw him at Chamanthie nangi & Dileepa malli´s wedding and still remember the speech he did. With his speech he made all the guests laughing. He was a very enthusiastic person. Most sincere condolences to Dileepa malli, Chamanthie nangi and the family. I worked with Dr Fonseka for 6 years from 1996 to 2001 on ward 58, Waikato Hospital. He was a kind, polite, collegial and a generous individual. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
