Sam is well remembered at one of his Scottish soccer clubs, Albion Rovers from Coatbridge. He was a no-nonsense, competitive centre-half and played in some memorable matches, including 3-0 and 1-0 victories against local rivals, Airdrie. Overall he played 37 times for Rovers and scored four goals.

After he moved to NZ, he took time to write to the club to thank to thank the supporters for "...the wonderful time and support you gave me during my stay at The Rovers. It was without doubt the happiest time I had while I was in Britain...".

I attended the Scotland-NZ match at the 1982 World Cup and was so proud to see Sam play for his adopted country against his native one.

Sam made a big and lasting impression at Albion Rovers in his short time there. Condolences from Scotland to his football friends and family.

Sam was a force of nature - passionate about everyone and everything he cared about. Our group benefitted from his belief that football had much more to offer than just what happened on a pitch. Camaraderie, friendship and support ... he loved the football community, and we loved him for it. Our condolences to the Malcolmson family. Josh Easby, chair of Friends of Football.

My condolences to the Malcolmson family, I know he has inspired and influenced a lot of people and will be missed.

I think I can blame Sam for my love of American sports and streetwear, after him telling me all the stories from his Starter days, I still remember the hat he got me when I was a kid - no one had it, and it was on all the commercials. I´m still upset I left it in a McDonalds somewhere.

May the memories bring moments of comfort and care.

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of Sam. We have many great memories of Sam which will always remain in our hearts. One of them was when I was President of Central United Football Club (we were not a loved club) but then along came Sam- everything changed- and he ended up making us the No.1 Club in Auckland. Forever grateful. Our Sympathy to all the family. A true gentleman now laid to rest. Ivan, Linda, Ivanka and Stanko Zonich

Suzanne,
I was so fortunate to meet Sam back in 2013. The time the four of us spent together was just wonderful. I will always think back to that time with memories of lots of laughter and an immediate connection to you both.
Love, Lori

I met Sam when he signed up to be a mentor with Business Mentors at Enterprise North Shore. We had a laugh with him being a Scot and me being English. He was so generous coaching business owners. I told my Dad that I had met Sam (Dad was a keen football supporter) and he told me Sam was a legend on the field.

Condolences to Sam´s family. Rest in love Sam x

Dearest Suzanne, Adel, Stewart and families
We are so very sorry to hear of the loss of such a special man like Sam. Hugo and he were great friends and spoke most weeks. With Hugo having passed in December 2023 I know they will be happy to be together once again.
Always we will hold Sam in a special place in our hearts for the kind, considerate, loving man he was. He didn't suffer fools and always said it how it was. Sam was very special to my daughter Joneen (Jo) Drummond as both Sam and Hugo were special mentors to her and then she worked with Sam at Snowy Peak, based in Christchurch.
Flying with the angels now Sam and at peace. You will be sorely missed by many. We all have the special memories now. Love always - Gaye McCartney and daughter Joneen Drummond.
