Once upon a time there were 4 Northland electorates: John Carter Bay of Islands, John Banks Whangarei, Lockwood Smith Kaipara and me - the MP for the newly recreated Hobson electorate. When they and their electorate executives convened quarterly, Ron ruled supreme.
Not surprisingly Ron and I clashed - from time to time but we remained friends of a sort. Ron earned my respect and trust - for what it was worth.
Never was Ron hostile and never did he stoop to the common level of politics exposed by Sir Wallace Rolwing who said:
"It´s not the enemy you worry about in politics. You can see them. It´s your friends. They come from behind".
I´m sure one of Ron´s proudest moments was to see the selection and election of his son, as MP for the combined regions Ron once ruled supreme.
I was pleased for him: a reward at long last.
Condolences to his family.
