To Ron and all his family and friends, please know that we, in New York, mourn the loss of Ron..
My family expresses our condolences to you.. Following Jewish custom, we wish you a long life.
Ron and I grew up together as kids. He lived at the foot of Omana Ave and I lived at the top of the Ave.. As kids, we spent much time together, joshing and joking with each other and our other friends, (including Nev Gladding noted below). We wiled away many hours, we romping around the slopes of Mount Eden, and Auckland and generally did what young kids did in those days.. I fondly remember how kind his father was to me (he always had large American cars), his mother (who was always concerned that we would lead Ron astray!!), Bob (who was a few years older than us and not part of our "team") and Deidre (who always wanted to run with us boys). Ron and I went to different schools and we both went our separate ways, but we nevertheless stayed strong friends throughout our lives over the next 70 years.
A couple of years ago when I was visiting Auckland, I felt the need to meet with him again after all those years (I had moved overseas in 1969) and we had a long lunch in an Auckland cafe reminiscing about our times as kids, his Army career, his work in jewelry, my life overseas, and particularly, our families. We expressed how lucky that we had been to have had such great and full lives, and how our families had brought us so much joy. Unlike our parents' generation, our generation had had no Depression, no world conflagrations, and general world peace. On top of that, we had the Beatles!!! We promised that whoever went first, the other would tell the world of how much joy we both had had in life, and how blessed we had been with our families.
Well, Ron, you old bugger, you went first.. you always were quicker than me (you were a couple of years older than me) at doing things ..
To me, our friendship will last forever...
Save some space for me...
Sail on... .
