Roger BUTCHER Obituary

BUTCHER, Roger. Passed away suddenly on Sunday October 15, 2017. Finally without pain. Loved husband of Jan (Baker), adored father of Josh (and partner Nina), and Caity (and partner Nick). Loving grandfather to Jaidyn and Declan. Adopted dad to Naomi and poppa to Hanna and Alex. Doted dad to the dumbest dogs ever - our dear Mango and Bailey. One of the founding retailers (and hippies) of the American waterbed industry, and an icon in the USA and NZ furniture industries. More recently, owner of Furniture City. A big man who lived a big life. So many stories to tell, and glasses of chardonnay to drink. Roger has requested at least 2 years of public displays of grief with plenty of loud wailing. A celebration of Roger's extraordinary life will be held on Tuesday October 24 at 11am. This may well be the first event Roger is on time to. Kelliher Estate, Puketutu Island, 600 Island Road, Mangere. Where else but on a private, over-the-top island! Or as Roger would say 'Final Days. Must End Tuesday. Never To Be Repeated. Don't Miss This Once In A Lifetime Opportunity!!' Communication to Jan at hanlengroup.nz @gmail.com or 45E Arana Drive Karaka.

Roger, assuming that you're reading these somewhere, I want you to know how much our friendship was valued, and how much I genuinely enjoyed every time we were able to 'bang brains' and solve the problems of the world. However, it should also be known that below that carefully developed bravado dwelt one of the kindest and most loyal souls - you are just a big softy with a good act. I miss you, and the free scotch....

I remember Roger for the time we spent together developing the AIR BED business in his Comfort Zone stores in California. He was most passionate about life and all things retail. We spent many hours with Tom Campbell & John Candel working on radio promotions, selling contest. He always took care of his people. We lost touch when he moved to NZ. His friendship extended to being my Best Man at our wedding. I will remember you always

I remember Roger quite fondly. I'll never forget his generosity and compassion. When in 1982, as I was employed at The Comfort Zone Waterbeds, I resigned due to my second pregnancy, later, when I was 8-1/2 months pregnant, my husband left.
Roger was so insenced this, and knowing they had filled my job position, Roger called me at home and assured me I would always have a job. When the time came, Rodger created a new position for me, had the warehouse team pack up my apartment, and stored all my belongings in the annex.
For myself, my friends and family, Roger will never be forgotten or lost. In my heart, Roger will forever be, My Hero.
I'm deeply sorry for the loss.

Roger taught me the "Assumptive Close"...Just assume the sale and start writing the order! He also assumed he could win people to his way of thinking...And he was right 99% of the time!
God Bless you old friend and hugs for Jan, Josh and Caity!
My Love,

Thank you Roger for always keeping me on my toes and making life full of opportunities, where anything is possible. Roger you were one of the most supportive people that I have met. You were always there to lend an ear and encourage me to think outside the square. You adored your family, and without hesitation supported Jan's kind generous nature, in opening your door to my children and I. I will never ever forget you and all you have done for me.
You never let anything hold you back, regardless of what it was. With much love I send my heartfelt sorrow to Jan, Caity and Josh.

BUTCHER, Roger (Roger). Ciao Roger. The world will be a smaller, duller place without you. There were only ever two choices; the Roger Way or the Wrong Way. Goodbye to a great man, a wise man and a respected friend. We will raise a toast to Roger on every possible occasion. Love and respect, Tim and Tania.
