The world should have paused when "Mr. Macdonald", as I respectfully remember my former teacher, died. He had a profound effect on me as a pupil and I'm sure on many if not all his pupils. In an age when NZ children feared the strap, Mr. Macdonald maintained order in the classroom by earning our instant and enduring respect, instead. By example, he taught us patience, kindness, modesty, and to do our best. He'd take us into the bush to connect with nature, teach us Maori culture and impart traditional indigenous ways of interacting with the natural world. When I was nine and my family moved to Canada, Mr. Macdonald painted a picture of a tiger for me which hangs on my wall to this day. My debt of gratitude to Mr. Macdonald is huge and I am very sad to hear of his passing, but hope he is resting in a very, very well deserved. peace.

Pity Mr Macdonald didn't quite make it as far as the Meadowbank School centenial. Many past pupils fondly remembered him as the best teacher they ever had and in particular his imparting of his love of nature.
