Dear Rita and family,
it is with great sadness that I learned the news about Robert yesterday.
I still have fond memories of my first research conference which happened
to be in Auckland in 94 and the visit to your home. Robert was the kindest
in our research community and such a gentleman. He did great work in my
field that will remain alive. Robert was an inspiration for me and he will
be greatly missed by all. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family.

Robert Chan was our Maths teacher in the 7th Form at Papakura High School in 1971.
He was a young man then only 10 years older than his students and in the second year of his career.
He treated us with respect and kindness and he challenged us to be the best we could.
Some people are lucky and have an inspirational teacher in their lives and Mr Chan was one of those.
My condolences to your family.

Robert Chan was our teacher and form master at Papakura High School in 1971. He was well liked and respected by all of us in his 7th Form class. He was still joining with us in email conversations 49 years later! How many teachers keep in contact for that long? We will miss you and will be forever grateful to have known you. RIP Bob.
