Mr Burgham (or Bob-san as I used to call him) was a charming wise owl. I met him for the first time in 2016 when I was carrying out research on Japanese immigrants as his wife, Michiko-san, was one of them. He had profound resources and a sharp memory. I could almost write a book just by learning from him. With his support and encouragement, I managed to get through my research. But the association with him and his wonderful family continued. He was a father figure to many with his brilliant smile and a good sense of humour. I was always looking forward to catching up with him whenever I went back to NZ, at least twice a year, when we would exchange notes about what was going on in the world. I miss him terribly, but knowing that he is finally reunited with Michiko-san will make me happy.
My condolences to all his family and friends
