Richard ROWE Obituary

ROWE, Richard James. Born May 06 1948. Passed away suddenly on April 4th 2023 at his home in Peeramon, Atherton Tablelands, Queensland aged 74 years. Much loved eldest son of the late Tasman and Nancy. Beloved brother of David, Peter and Diney. Esteemed brother-in-law of Deborah, Ruth and Paul. Cherished "eccentric professor" and uncle of Catherine, Elizabeth, Matthew, Liesel, Stephanie, Harry and Josie. Much admired by his academic colleagues - especially his doctoral students. Will be greatly missed by his friends and relatives worldwide - especially those in Central Otago. A worthwhile life dedicated to the study and advancement of entomology. Forever chasing butterflies.

Richard was one of those 'gentleman scientists' and I say that in its most positive meaning. We will miss visiting him on those travel when we venture north.

Just discovered Richards passing, was at college with him where even then he was known as "prof". Have for years meant to touch base with hm again but looks like next meeting will be up to me, one day.

Only just heard of Richard´s death. Hadn´t had an email for a while, so looked on Google to read the sad news. We were friends doing science papers at Uni and he visited us in NZ last year. Will miss his quirky but very kind and gentle approach to life. A lovely, unusual man

Have only just learnt that he's died. A friend from school days. Who often arrived in Wellington expecting - correctly - that he could stay with us. Will miss him.

As Director (Operations) of the Australian Entomological Society, Richard played a key role in the society's management, particularly issues to do with funding and finance, something none of the rest of us wanted to do. I note the "eccentric professor" term applied to him by his nephews and nieces which I think is very apt. I am also a Director of the AES and we will miss him at our Board meetings. The Society will arrange for an obituary to be prepared covering his entomological activities for the Society's News Bulletin. My personal condolences to his family.
