i was saddened to hear the passing of 'Doc' Mayhew. I didnt know him personally, but i was taught by his mother at Rosmini College, and was in the same class as his brother David. Best Wishes to Doc's wife and children and to all in the Mayhew Family.

John,

You and I were classmates as we traveled the path through secondary school together in Auckland. You were always the one that stood head and shoulders above virtually all others in our class for your leadership and academic qualities and yes, all your footy achievements. I guess above all else I will remember you for your sense of integrity and fairness ..... and especially for that smile you always seemed to have on your face.

I fondly remember the number of times I watched you on the TV in different countries as you also travelled, but as the Doc for the AB's ... the team that so many of us Kiwi's were always so proud of .... and yes, you made a HUGE contribution to their successes.

You saw my sister recently when she needed some medical attention and she came back and told me that you'd asked after me. I tried to reach out to you on FB so we could touch base again just a couple of weeks ago, but you likely might not have seen my message.

Go well mate, you will ALWAYS be remembered ..... and my kindest thoughts go to your wife and all your family.

Played 1st XV with John, and then several enjoyable years on Rosmini College board of trustees, where we even spent some time discussing school matters! Frequently enjoyed sharing sideline with him watching 1st XV over later years. Great sense of humour, and always down to earth despite his high profile. His achievements need no further acknowledgement from me as very well known. RIP John - taken way too soon.

Happy days. One of Tom's old rugby cronies. Toodleoo Mayhew. Funnell put us both on detention but we escaped thru the back gate.

I had the pleasure of meeting John at Crossfit Birkenhead where I provided massages 2010-2015. John cheekily referred to my massages as a "panelbeating" session. We also bumped into each other at Mt Smart where he would be sideline with the Warriors and I would be providing massages for the Australian opposition. John always made time for people and went beyond the call of duty. My last encounter with John was sharing lunch together as he insisted on catching up while I was undergoing a course of radiation treatment. A great man gone too soon.

How do you say goodbye to someone who has given selflessly of his time, his knowledge, and his experience to all of us? Whose humour and wit could dissolve us in tears? Whose love for his family, his grandchildren was ferocious, relentless and knew no bounds? Who walked as a friend among us but strode as a legend in his own right?

You don´t. Instead you count yourself blessed to have been a part of his life, and you celebrate it, and you give thanks that for one brief moment in time, he belonged to us.

Moe mai e te Rangatira, moe mai.

Dearest Rinks, Rick, Mick, Nick & Anna, there are no words that can adequately describe the overwhelming loss of Johnny. I have recollected fond memories of the last 50 years, lots of laughs, from great times, both in New Zealand & when we were in London, great night´s at The Texas Lone Star just one example. Johnny was a much loved husband, father, grandfather & friend. His loss is immeasurable. I was so glad that I got to see him last month. He was telling me of the wonderful family holiday last year with all his beloved family. Gorgeous Johnny was a wonderful man & will be greatly missed. Sending you all my deepest condolences & love. He will always be gorgeous Johnny. With all my love to you all, Ollie & also kind regards from Peter
