We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Buchan Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Raymond Richard Buchan US Army 1st Sergeant. I take your black honor bracelet with me where ever I go. I told my husband this morning, i don't leave home without Raymond. I know that if your name is spoken you will watch over us. We have never met, but someday we will. While we were in the middle of a strong storm I wore your name on my wrist incase I had to leave the house quickly. Keep watching over your loved ones and know that there are also friends out there that never met you but are honored to speak your name and remember you in a prayer.

It is hard to believe it has been 5 years since you were taken from us so tragically. I think of you every day and thank you for the ultimate sacrifice you gave so I may live in freedom, without terror. I think of your 2 sons and my heart hurts. You were the best son-in-law anyone could ask for. A great husband, father, and provider. A dedicated and loyal soldier, you gave your life to protect and serve. May you continue to rest in peace and know you will never be forgotten. Your memory lives on.

We have never met SFC Raymond Buchan and will never have the opportunity or honor to do so. We have a very close family friend whom is like a son to us. He was around Raymond when he lost his life. We have been wearing Raymond's memorial band in his honor for several years. Raymond goes with us every place we go. He is on vacation with us, at our children's weddings, and with us in happy and sad times. Raymond is a special part of our family, and we are honored to be wearing his name. Some day we would like to visit his grave site. We're from Bath, Pennsylvania. God Bless his Wife and his children. Please know, that there are strangers who love your husband/father/son. We want to thank Raymond and his family for the ultimate sacrifice he made for us all.

I was SFC Buchan's Platoon Leader from 2002-2003 ( 1st Platoon, Alpha Co, 1/18INF). Then SSG Buchan was my weapons squad leader during that time. He was a true soldier and warrior. I considered him a "man's man" a "go to guy". I often relied on his expertise before I made a decision, his friendship when I needed it. He was someone whom you could count on whether it be mission related or off duty. I found out about his passing today. I am deeply saddened, American lost a good son, The Army a great NCO, his wife a great husband, and his children a loving and great father. May he forever rest in peace. To the Buchan Family, I have some pictures from our Kosovo tour ( circa 2002) please provide me an address and I will send them.

I was SFC Buchan's Platoon Leader in 1996. We were in Delta 1-9 CAV in Kuwait. I just learned of what happened to him from our old company commander. Raymond was a fine soldier when I knew him, I can only imagine that he grew into a fantastic leader. I will never forget Raymond. Dear Laura,

Michelle and I are indeed so sorry for your loss. You may or not remember us but we lived across the way from you in Askren Manor from 02-05 and have 3 kids, Elisa, Robby and Michael. Hayden and our boys would play all the time outside. I was thinking about you guys today as I often have around this time of year cause of the upcoming football season and how Ray and I would go at eachother because face it, if you are not a Steelers fan then there was obviously something wrong with you in his eyes. I was devastated to find that your husband and superb Soldier had paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country and for that I will always be grateful to him and you as well. Having served over in Iraq myself and I have seen first hand of the progress that has been made and you can rest assured that your husbands sacrifice to our nation was not in vane and he will NEVER be forgotten, nor will you and the sacrifice that you have made. May God Bless you and your boys and I can testify to you that families are forever and you will be with Ray again.

To Laura and the Kids,
Y'all are always in my prayers and thoughts daily. There are times I wish to call, but my thoughts and feelings wish not to make you sad for the day. My intent is to see how y'all are doing. I wish only comfort and healing for the soul for you and Hayden.
Ray's photo is hanging in my office to remind me of his ultimate sacrifice every day. My days are spent reminding others that they don't have it as bad as they think. His smile brightens my whole day. His memory will live forever in me. I thank the lord for allowing our path to cross during my life here on earth. My kids have come to understand what good, honest and forth giving a man can be. Which produces the Son, Brother, Husband, Father and Senior Noncommissioned Officer that he became. God Bless!

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Rich was one of the first people I met when I moved to Johnstown, PA as a 14-year-old kid in 1987. He was kind, energetic, and had a gift for making me laugh. He and his family made me feel very welcome in their home many times throughout high school.
As happens so often, I lost touch with Rich after graduating from high school. When my mother broke the news to me about his passing, I was stunned. Even after 16 years, I just assumed that one day I would bump into him and we would catch up over drinks, or dinner, or whatever.
When talking to someone about my high school memories, even after all these years, Rich's name always somehow surfaces - usually as part of a story that ends with me laughing.
I will always think of Rich Buchan as a good friend, a good teammate, and a good person who had a loving, supportive family. Even though it's unfortunate that his life ended far too soon, we should all be so lucky to be remembered in such a fashion.

Mr. & Mrs. Buchan and Philip, you have my deepest sympathies. Bless you all.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To the Buchan family, I offer my condolences. I never met Sergeant First Class Buchan, but like many other families that have been affected by the war, I am praying. Know that there are plently of us who feel the pain and sorrow, even though it hasn't touched us the same way, we too are being affected. I realize that this was a husband, son, dad, and maybe even a sibling of someone. God loves you all and will take care of you! Trust in Him and seek His everlasting love. Look forward to the day that your faith will come into full circle. I expect you all to rejoice in knowing that this is not the final outcome of your beloved Ray's life. I offer a prayer from the 23 Psalms and just want you to know that we love you and thank you for having such a beautiful soul to care for us by serving and protecting us. I salute SFC Buchan, and thank you all once again for giving us a wonderful man to serve each of us in the U.S.

While visiting Johnstown, PA this summer it was a shock to read the local headline telling the news of Rich and his gift to our Country. Life is a gift from God and it is both an honor and a loss to hear about Rich and what he has done for the U.S.A. Thank you to Rich for fighting and making the ultimate sacrifice so that I can have freedom to live and focus on my husband and 4 kids. My deepest symapthy goes out to Laura and your two boys. Dear Laura, Hayden and Andy,
I will never forget my memories of the time that I got to spend with SGT Ray, as I like to call him. No one could ask for a better friend and no soldier could ask for a better leader. I don't know how many times I saw Ray out with his family, enjoying every moment of their time together. If it was teaching Hayden how to ride his bike or just playing in the yard, he was always spending as much time with his family as he could. Ray will never be forgotten. I'm sure he left an impression on every person he met and there will always be a space in our hearts for him. Sgt Ray will always be my friend and I will miss him.
Our family sends you our deepest condolences and the Buchan family is in our hearts and prayers.

To my daughter Laura, my grandsons Hayden and Andy:
Ray was the most loving and dedicated husband/father anyone could ever hope for. He was one of the most dedicated soldier this United States of America could ever ask for. If I could trade places with Ray I would. There are no words of comfort that will ever express this tragic loss. His memory will live on, in all our hearts, for the rest of our lives. His legacy will live on through you, his wife, and his two precious sons. He is an angel now who will keep vigil over you. To you Ray, for your unselfish sacrifice, so that we all may continue to live in freedom. Ray, God, and all his angels will be with you in the difficult times ahead. All my love: Mom/Grandma

We live with the regrets of the things we didn’t do or say to those we loose to death. The things that we will remember are the good experiences. Knowing Rich was that a good experience and rewarding. He played a big part capturing the district six championship in football. His never quite attitude on the field and playful joking – ness off the field made him a likeable guy and easy to get a long with. This quote fits Rich.
The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.

July 13, 2007

I have nothing but good thoughts for Rich Buchan from our childhood in Southmont to our time as teamates in High School. I just enjoyed being around him. When you're a kid you don't really contemplate why you like someone, you just do. Since his death, I have thought about the reasons I enjoyed being around him so much...
I laughed at his sense of humor, noticed his integrity and respected his toughness. Rich was someone I would want on my team no matter what the game was. I'm sure the guys in his platoon felt the same way.
I hadn't spoken to him in years...and for that I'm sorry. If I could talk to him today...I would tell him how proud I am of his service to our country and thank him for the sacrifices he has made over the years.
It is hard for me not to feel guilty for all of the blessings that I have while brave soldiers like Rich give their lives for this great nation. My heart breaks when I think of the pain that this loss has caused his parents, brother, wife and children.
Now, I will honor his memory for the rest of my life. I will make sure my own children understand that the freedom we enjoy comes with a price.
Rich...
My prayer for you is that God keeps you in his care now and forever. Until we meet again...

Laura,
I have kept in contact with many freinds from Germany and Annette and I always remember the great times we had with you guys in Germany. I'm sorry to hear about Ray, I remember the hassle he used to give me about not liking the Steelers, and the many hours in the gym. He will be truly missed, I know he loved you all with the way he treated Hayden. He was a proud father and husband. We are truly saddened today for your loss, I would have made it to the funeral just because and give you a hug. Take Care Laura and contact me and annette anytime. We Love You

Laura, Hayden, Andrew,
Mr. & Mrs. B, and PJ

There are no words to express the sympathy that we have for your family at this time. Mark and I truly loved Richie and will continue to honor him every day. Although we did not get to talk as often as we would have liked, when we did it was as if no time had passed. We laughed with him...We cried with him...We got in trouble with him :)... and now we are comforted that he is at peace. He watched over us and our country for 16 years, and now he will watch over us for eternity!!!
LAura, you have the best gift of all...His legacy. You are the one person that can assure that those little boys know what a hero their father really was and is!! Hold them close and continue to see him in their eyes!!
Mr. & Mrs. B, You were his biggest cheerlearders!! No matter what choices he made in life, you always supported him and stayed optimistic. You were like parents to all of us growing up, and we hope that you will continue to help guide us in our lives!!
PJ, You have become a fine man, and we know your brother would be extremely proud of how you handled things throughout this tragedy. You too displayed bravery and leadership in an extremely difficult time!! We are very proud of you!!
PLease remember that you can call us ANYTIME!! We will always be available for all of you, as you truly are family to us!!!!!

To the Buchan Family, I am so deeply sorry for your lose! Ray and I were stationed together in 93 & 94 with 3-5 Cav in Kirchgoens Germnay, we ran the fuelers for the Battalion, We were very close and spent many a drunkin night together after the long days of work, we later ran into each other when we were both stationed at Ft. Hood at the same time, although we weren't in the same unit there, we still got together often. The next time we saw each other was when he went to Ft. Benning, Ga. for his BNCOC course while he was a recruiter. That was when I meet his future wife Laura, we were hanging out in a place called Reggies most of the time. The next time that Ray and I saw each other was again in Germany in 2003...during Gunner for my unit, he was Evaluating my units Gunner for our prep to go to Iraq... That was the last time I saw Ray and when we parted ways I remember giving him a big hug and saying "I will see you soon Bro" ....... Ray, Thanks for the service you have done for your country, Thanks for the outstanding soldiers you help produce, Thanks for all the laughs, and most of all Thanks for being my friend (you could always make me smile). This cold one is for you Bro......I LOVE YOU RAY!!

Dear Buchan Family,
I heard of your loss from a mutual friend. Although I never knew Rich, from the stories told about what kind of person, father and soldier he was, I feel he is part of my family. I am confident, God has a very special place for him so that he can continue to take care of you. I feel so very proud and secure knowing that the United States military has brave soldiers such as your Hero and I will pray that our Father Almighty will guide all of you through these tremendously difficult times and throughout your lives.
With the greatest respect and gratitude, please accept my deepest sympathy.

We met Sgt. Buchan when he recruited our son in 2000. His genuine interest and advice made our son's military experience very positive, and Sgt. Buchan had a positive effect on our son which lasts to this day. We got to know him as almost a family member as he went fishing and boating with our son. His advice during the enlistment process was very valuable.
Sgt. Buchan's enthusiasm and dedication to the Army was infectious. The country, our Army, our family and his family have lost an excellent man and a role model for young men of every stripe.
Please accept our sympathy on your tremendous loss and may God be with you.

Laura, Hayden, Andy, Mr. & Mrs. Buchan, and PJ

I never expected it, not ever, for what happened to Rich. I was planning to sit around with him one day and get caught up on the past couple of years. He is absolutely the most brave person that I have ever known. During his toast yesterday I had nothing planned to say since PJ asked me about it. So all of the words were from the heart. I am really going to miss him a lot. He was someone that you can always count on for anything, and a guy that would do anything for anyone. If anyone needs anything please do not hesitate to contact me. I will be in touch. God bless Rich and all of the people who he has made life better for.

Dear Buchan Family,
I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I am not surprised to read all of the wonderful things written about Rich. The last time I saw Rich he had just gotten home from basic training. I was getting ready to leave for Marine corps boot. He gave me some good advice about the military and I will never forget that. It seems like only yesterday getting off the bus and walking down Bluff St. together. Rich was a great friend and neighbor. He will never be forgotten. He is a true American Hero.

On behalf of my husband, 1SG John Hatley and myself, we are both proud and honored to have known this fine soldier, SFC Raymond Buchan. Quite literally, he was one of the very best and was beloved by all that knew him here. Raymond had previously been one of my husband's soldiers in A. Company and then moved on to the most recent, B. Company assignment. Our hearts and prayers of comfort go to Laura, a fine woman, whom we all adore and love. She remains in our thoughts. May all that knew and loved Raymond, find comfort in knowing that he was one of the very best soldiers, ever. He will "not", be forgotten. We thank you for his service and sacrifices. I did not know this great hero but I have no doubt that he was a caring and giving person with a loving family. There are those of us who know the loss of a loved one in Iraq and we have you in our prayers. After I lost Jared things were hard and days were tough. With God's comfort and reaching out to others in this book that know how you feel, things will get better over time. I ask God to pour out His comfort to you.

Ray, You will be deeply missed! You are a HERO and will always be remembered as such. I had so much fun with you while we were on recruiting duty in Erie together. In those 3 short years we in the station bonded like brothers. Your smile was always uplifting no matter the situation. Laura, I know we didn't get to know each other that well, but if there is anything my family and I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. God Bless you and your family, and may SFC Raymond Buchan rest in peace.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
