Phil was a truly unique and wonderful friend. I had the pleasure of being in his circle of tennis buddies when he spent 5 or so years in Hollywood Florida USA in the 80s. He must have been 25-30 years old. He loved his tennis so much, he was one of a kind and true inspiration to so many. As someone said, he loved "Rod" Stewart, beers, and tennis. Everytime we were at a bar and a Rod Stewart song came on, he would put up his arem and make a fist and yell, its Rod!! I remember him speaking about his brother, and how when he went back to NZ he would team up with him to play doubles in tournaments. RIP buddy

Phil: A kindred spirit, a person who valued freedom, a rare beast, a dear friend. All that tennis we hit, beers we necked, and laughs we had. Go well brother, Okke.

Phil always had a warm friendly smile. So sad to lose such a solid likeable tennis legend. Somebody who made tennis look so easy when he played. And people feel easy when he spoke. RIP Phil you will be missed!

Phil was the most awe inspiring person I have met in my 10 years in New Zealand. We met 8 years ago and since then I and my regular tennis buddies loved our Friday morning lesson. I called it my weekly "psychotherapy" session. We laughed and learnt so much. To have him not on Court No 6 anymore is so very sad. More sad is for his long term partner Nancy and the rest of his family and many friends. RIP Phil we all will miss you massively. Big hug Serena, until we meet again for more fun.

To Donald Sim,
Have great memories at Royal Oak quite a gang Phil always had a great smile on his face and something to say with it. The years have gone very fast the club seems lost without the personalities but it was an honour to be part of it. A lot of people will miss him.
God bless.
