I was very sad to hear about Phil. His work on the Terrain.net site has been invaluable to me. It has been my first port of call whenever I have wished to ID an insect... and I have exchanged many messages with him about NZ plants and bugs. Very sad indeed, he'll be greatly missed. Regards, Jane Percival

I just learned the sad news of Phil's passing.
Phil was a talented naturalist and photographer and he leaves behind a wealth of knowledge about NZ nature on iNaturalist NZ. While I mostly knew Phil online, I also fondly remember our nature ramble along the Te Henui walkway back in 2014 when I was visiting New Plymouth.
My condolences to Phil's family. He was a wonderfully knowledgeable and generous person. He won't be forgotten.

Dear Faye, It's many years since I saw you and Phil - last time was at the club rooms when I still lived in Auckland. I have been back in New Plymouth 13 years now and do wish I had been able to catch up with you. I remember Phil as one of the nicest people back in those Underwater Club days and I have always had and always will have precious memories of those days. Proud to still see my name on the board down there at the club rooms. Faye I am so sorry Phil is no longer with you, but the memory I have of him and all of the club people, functions and the hard work we put in to making the New Plymouth Underwater Club one of the most successfufl in New Zealand. Rest in Peace Phil and love to you Faye - Lynne Hines

Our memories of Phil are etched in our minds forever; interwoven with the Knights, the Mokes and the Hen and Chicks, his never ending array of practical jokes and practical suggestions and his insightful and life changing conversation over a port...or two.
Many of us went back time after time, certainly not for the Norseman's sleek lines or speed or comfort in a beam sea, we went back to see our friend Phil, to be in the company of the most knowledgable skipper and diver we knew and, although we did not know it at the time, to make memories that will last our lifetimes.
Thanks Mr. B

Dear Faye and Family
My condolences to you all. Many Happy Memories of you both when underwater diving was in it's infancy. 143 Pioneer Road was an unofficial club gathering place, in those early days. Lots of fun, crayfish, Paula and fish. Big cook ups. Happy memories. I did enjoy my drink with you both just a few weeks ago and going down memory lane. A colourful character who will be missed by many.
Sincere Sympathy, Allie

Sorry to hear of Phil's passing. We spent many hours together on the Te Henui walkway removing the dreaded trandescantia and laughing while we worked. Our condolences go out to Faye and your family.

Will always remember Phil when he was the chemist in Stratford when I was young lad. He then left Stratford for Tutikaka Fishing. Norseman I think was his vessels name. Lovely caring guy was Phil. Will be very sadly missed. RIP.
