Peter WINQUIST Obituary

WINQUIST, Peter Anthony. Born East London, South Africa, 1956, died Auckland 11 November 2021, aged 64. Beloved husband of Rosemary, father of Joanne and Vineet, Stephanie and James, and Jessica. Precious "Dandad" to Maya, Daniel and Robin. A prince among gentlemen, he moved among kings and commoners, and never lost his touch. His aristocratic mind and wit revelled in many interests. His democratic love saw the human need. He loved his faith, he loved his family, a brave, Magnificent, cheerful man to the end. With grateful thanks for the outstanding care from the haematology team and other staff at North Shore Hospital: Dr Eileen Merriman, Drs Henry, Anna, and the fabulous Fiona.

A jewel of a man, strongly ethical, a mighty intellect, a shrewd observer, faith-filled and spiritual, empathetic, a language lover delighting in puns, a deep thinker, a rascal full of fun and even, a big kid are all terms we could use to describe Peter Winquist. We grew up in South Africa during the bad old days of apartheid and attended the same ultra conservative university where we were both members of the student catholic society or Cathsoc. This organisation had a profound influence on both of us as we were challenged to examine the issues facing our university and country while we were deepening and exploring our faiths. We also experienced warm Christian community with our fellow students. Many late nights were spent in profound discussion often with a glass of wine in hand interspersed with lots of fun and silliness. Peter was always a staunch friend and support to those in need. Those twinkling eyes and humorous quips sometimes disguised intense concern and kindness. We will miss you, lovely man, and it will be hard to fill the hole in the world that your absence will make. Go to your God and rest in peace. Your friend, Hylda
