Jeanne and family - children and grandchildren - were so sorry to hear of the sudden death of Nicholas; brother-in-law, uncle and great-uncle at the other side of the world. He was greatly admired by all of us for his formidable academic achievements.

My sincere condolences to Prof Tarling's family. I will never forget the happy memories of working at the Department of History in the early 1970s. He was an amazing person and a most intelligent Professor and will be sadly missed.

Bagai ragam padi, makin berisi makin merunduk. Like the rice stalk, the more laden it becomes, the more bent it becomes. Similarly as a scholar the more knowledgeable he becomes, the more humble he is. Nick was a scholar par excellence full of humility.
Farewell dear Nick.

Nick inspired me as an undergraduate to turn my attention to Asia and, in the past few years, when we bumped into each other at UoA, inspired me to become a university academic at this late stage. I will never forget his lecture on Neville Chamberlain with its memorable "pathetic piping peals of peace" line. His performances, whether at the front of B28 in a lecture or on stage in a Shakespearian play, were spellbinding. His legacy lives on in the lives of many of us.
