I know this is very late, but I remember in 2015, when I was just 9, my mother sent me to play chess at the North Shore chess club, I remember how we had to say everything twice for you to hear. And I remember you teaching me basics of chess and gave me this love for chess that I have now, I am sincerely saddened by your passing, though I am 2 years late. Rest in Peace.

Every chess player in New Zealand owes a debt of gratitude to Peter. He served chess in every capacity, locally and nationally. He also wrote on New Zealand's chess history, including a bibliography of all New Zealand's chess publications. He collated discs on New Zealand tournament games. Peter's contribution in preserving New Zealand's chess history was exceptional. His own part in that history will never be forgotten.

RIP Uncle Peter, thank you for the memories at grandmas, teaching me my 7x table and brushing me up on my geography :) They are literally the only thing I remember from school. I'm sorry that we didn't get to see more of each other over the years. Love Fleur

I'll never forget Peter as someone who set down good proper procedures as well as credible methods of operating and achieving results. A great loss to NZ Chess.

I'd like to write a few lines about Peter. I moved to New Zealand in 2007 so I have not known him as long as most of you have. However, during that time, he became a good friend and a trusted advisor. He was a man of complete integrity and the highest principles, dedicated to chess and particularly to juniors and club players. He was a stickler for correct procedures and cost-effective organisation. His enthusiasm and constant hard work kept our club active and involved in every aspect of Auckland chess - ACA Interclubs, NZCF Interschools, Jenkins Trophy matches, internal tournaments in a variety of categories, time controls, and even chess variants (Fischer Random for example), and of course our annual North Shore Open, which he organised and directed.
Peter has also been involved in every aspect of NZ chess on a national scale - Editor of the magazine, President of the federation, International Arbiter and International Organiser, Life Member. At international level he has been a player for NZ (most recently at the World Seniors Team Championship in 2014) and a captain (e.g. the Women's Olympiad team in 2014). His contribution to chess here in NZ is incalculable. And of course he has been North Shore's club champion more times than I can readily count on the trophy sitting in front of me
We have been honoured to have him on our ticket. His input to our policies was substantial and he shared our vision for junior development and organisational upgrade. In particular, we were encouraged by his confidence in our ability to put our policies into practice. He will be sorely missed by our team and by North Shore Chess Club - but we will continue to present our ideas for the future of NZ chess, knowing that he will be cheering us on.

Sad to here of this. Peter I knew from the early days. He and I played chess in tournaments. The first game I have I think was 1964. We also played in the NZ Seniors. Peter was a force in NZ Chess and as far as I knew him very likable. In the Chess world he worked greatly. And this is for real. His other life I know little of but this is the way of these things. My condolences to all those who are relatives or knew Peter.

So sorry to hear of his untimely passing. He was a private dignified individual who I got to know better over recent years. Condolences to Lynn and Michael.

From the New Zealand Chess Federation. NZ Chess has lost one of its greatest warriors. Peter was one of the stalwarts of NZ Chess with an unsurpassed record as a chess administrator, organiser, magazine editor and NZ representative player. He held the title of NZ Master, was a former president and life member of the NZ Chess Federation. His life-long dedication to the administration and development of chess in New Zealand was greatly admired and respected by his peers. He will be greatly missed.
