Peter O'HARA Obituary

Peter´s death is sad news indeed. He was my boss at NZPA between 1988 and 1996. Peter was a superb leader - he had all the journalism and managerial qualities by the truckload. I gained in media smarts thanks to his assured guidance. He was one of those rare people who impressed everyone who met him. Peter will be remembered fondly by many.

I just found an old business card of Peter's while going through some old paperwork. I cannot remember when I would have met him or if I did Cork Ireland seems most likely. Failing that I am not sure why I have his business card. I do know that there are O' Hara connections in my family tree somewhere but I cannot be sure if this is the connection. I have just heard the very sad news that Peter died last year. I had no idea, as I have not lived in NZ since 1992. Peter was my boss at NZPA from 1988 until 1992. He was superb manager, a very experienced journalist and a great person. Peter was very supportive of his staff - including young journalists. Peter encouraged me to write a lot of news stories and features and was so encouraging and helpful. He made journalism fun and was a pleasure to work with him. His management of NZPA was outstanding. When I left NZPA in early 1992, he wrote me a great reference, which helped me get work in Australia. I always had the greatest respect and affection for him. I have very fond memories of Peter and NZPA all those years ago. NZ journalism has lost one of its stars. We will not forget him.

Carol I have just heard this sad news of Peter.Having read the battle Peter has endured over a time it has been tough for you both.
Its been a considerable time since our paths crossed but always remember you both with great affection.

Hello, Carol: I'm much saddened to read this. Over the last 50 or so years I always meant to catch up with Peter. We did 20 or so years ago by phone when he was at TVNZ.

I always remember you both made available your flat so I could have a 21st party - April, 1971, Whangarei, when we worked at The Northern Advocate.

Dearest Carol
My heart is filled with such sadness. There are no words that help to ease the pain of loss, but I wanted you to know I am thinking of you and the family and remembering Peter throughout the years that I was privileged to have known him.
I feel like that is nearly half my life - having met way back in the NPA/NZPA days when I first moved to Wellington and our paths continued to cross for the next 20 odd years - or is that 30 !! Carol, you and Peter have always shown so much kindness and support to me and there are so many memories that I will hold dear always.
