Peter was the Mental Health Commissioner before I was appointed to the role. As Chair Commissioner, Peter led a work programme that identified the many problems people faced getting the help they needed when they suffered mental distress and/or addictions. His work helped to bring about a suite of changes to enable earlier access to appropriate services that are ongoing. In addition to his clinical work, Peter's services as Chair Commissioner will continue to have a beneficial impact on the mental wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

Peter was instrumental in my moving to New Zealand. In 1991 i was the leader of US mental Centre looking for a host for my two month sabbatical tour and Peter welcomed me into his office that eventually led me to move to NZ. He was well known internationally especially in the UK and Trieste where are paths crossed. He was a terrific leader and an inspiring humble man.

I am so sorry to read of Peter's death. His dad Dr Vic McGeorge was my family's GP in Mt Eden in the 1970's & he spoke so highly of Pete. In the 1980's I met him & Sue & collaborated with Peter in the 90's. He was a lovely man. Condolences to the family.

We grew up with the McGeorge trio of Tristan, Andrew and Stefan during our college days. Our sincerest condolences to Sue and our dear school friends and their families. Peter is such a true, kind and humble gentleman and a scholar. He always made us feel safe, heard and supported whenever we visited or stayed at Essex road. There were also countless times when he would transport us around like from pillar to post to get us to and from sports practices or other juvenile social activities. BTW it was Tristan who taught me ( David Tapu ) how to drive manual in your car Peter, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't me who buggered up the clutch back then...ha ha ha. Love always from the TSB's XX00XX

Dear Sue, I am so sad to hear of Peter´s death. My first memory of him was at an NZAP meeting, I had recently returned from England and its formalities. Peter, president then perhaps? was playing his guitar and singing `If I had a hammer´; what a good introduction it was! I found him warm engaging and good for talking with about our different points of view. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear Sue,
I am sad to hear of Peter's passing. Whilst never really close to him in our class at Medical School or over the years, I always thought of Peter as a gentleman with a great warmth and sharp wit. It was particularly special to me that we had a chance to chat after many years while crossing on the ferry to Waiheke two years ago for a class reunion lunch. Warm thoughts to you and your family.

Much love to you Sue and to all of Peter's family. Margie and I emigrated to Aotearoa in 1991 where I joined the new ATI (AUT) psychotherapy training programme and later became a member of NZAP and then a Council Member. We both enjoyed close contact with Peter and Sue through the 90's. Peter and I worked closely together developing NZAP supervision standards . A most memorable psychotherapy conference evening included the musical performance "I did not sit School C" with Peter, Roy, Peter Reid and others. May it live in our memory forever!
So multi-talented, smart, big heart, compassionate man, Peter made a massive contribution to mental health in Aotearoa New Zealand.

My late husband Peter Brown who passed away 2 years ago...went to AGS with Peter...
My husband came out from the UK in 5th Form year ...Your Peter and mine formed a friendship where they had an interest in cars!!
My Peter took great delight in sharing how your Peters father told them in no uncertain terms to get rid of the car off t
his property..
He was so grateful for the friendship and kindness Peter showed him..
He had come from a Public School in the UK and he said Peter was like a breath of fresh Air...thank you Peter McGeorge.

Arohanui to Sue and loved family. I always felt privileged to experience Sue and Peter's collegial friendship and wise counsel in the Association of Psychotherapists in Aotearoa. Peter led us into a well considered and more effective organisation and was always ready to guide and care. He is remembered as a taonga in our history. May his vision and his words remain in our memories. Roy Bowden

My sincere condolences to Peter´s family his friends and work colleagues in Aotearoa, Australia and around the world.
I was fortunate to have met Peter some 15 years ago. His deep commitment to and his experience in closed stand alone psychiatric hospitals and building real community mental health services drew me to him. Peter was always generous with his time and his knowledge. When you were with him, you felt his genuine care for humanity, his humility, and his vision shown bright. His legacy is huge. Vale Peter McGeorge.

Worked with Peter over several years, including helping a little with his PhD studies in Australia. I also worked as a consultant with Peter while he was heading Mental Health at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. He was leading a project designed to create service alternatives for people to the hospital Emergency Department. He also provided advice about the role Mental Health Commissions can play in promoting reform. He was an enlightened professional with a curious mind about how to make things better for people with a mental illness and their families. He was also affable and good fun. I will miss him.

Peter was a colleague and dear friend. I worked alongside him for many years across a range of different contexts. He was caring, kind, intelligent, funny and sincere. Peter inspired those who worked with him and he was tireless in his pursuit of excellence. On a personal level I valued his advice and mentorship. Much love and aroha to Sue and whanau.

We only met infrequently, but those times were always memorable and special. He was a gentle man and a gentleman; a courageous leader and advocate. Peter was always an inspiration and a friend, generous with his time (and often his patience), who was absolutely serious about his work, but retained a wonderful capacity, sufficient humility and deep humanity to know when not to take himself too seriously.

To Peter's family, on hearing of Peter's recent death, I wanted to reach out and express my deepest condolences. I worked with Peter in the PCLI (Pathways to Community Living) program in Sydney when he was our clinical lead, and also prior to that when he was at St. Vincent's mental health service. Peter brought such a refreshing, positive and strongly person centred approach to psychiatry, he was hugely supportive, and just an absolute delight to work with. He is greatly missed by the psychiatry world in NSW and I can only imagine how much he will be missed by his family and friends. With warmest regards, Jo Sommer
