Peter CLELAND Obituary

CLELAND, Peter David. Of Remuera, Auckland. Suddenly, on Sunday 10th October 2021, aged 64 years. Eldest son of the late David and Joan Cleland of Palmerston North. Loved husband of Adrienne, proud father of Isaac and Sunny, and Thalia, a special co-optee to the family. Loved brother and brother-in-law of Alan, Barry and the late Marie, Kevin and Anne, Darryl and Trish, Martin and Charlotte, and Joanne and Grant Harris, Mark and Shirley Chrystall, Robert and Margaret Chrystall, Shirley and Brian Lucas, the late Susie, and Martin Pike. Loved uncle of his numerous nieces and nephews whom he often reminded, 'There's no-one neater than Uncle Peter.' A great friend and constant voice to many. A service of thanksgiving will be held for Peter on Monday 18th October at 11am. Due to current restrictions this will be a closed gathering, however anyone is welcome to join this service by livestream. Please email [email protected] and link details will be forwarded to you. Peter was a larger than life character, and he will be greatly missed by many. Safe in the arms of Jesus.

Dear Adrienne, Issac and the wider Cleland whanau. We were so sorry to hear the news about Peter. We have such fond memories of him and it was so special to be able to hear other people's stories about him. He always seemed to have a twinkle on his face and was up to some sort of escapade. We can only imagine how much his loss will leave a big hole in your wider family.
Please know that our thoughts are with you.
Love from Megan & Gavin

A shock is an understatement. As has been said by many, Peter was larger than life and his presence lightened up every room.
I remember Peter and Adrienne well as neighbours in Palmerston North leading our daughters astray. I remember him as a member of the technical staff of NZDRI. His negotiating skills with sellers of laboratory equipment were unsurpassed. He was always enthusiastic to try new gadgets and ways of doing things. He enhanced the lives of all he contacted. Sincere condolences.

Dear Adrienne and Family

I was shocked to hear about Peter's sad passing and would like to add my sincere condolences to all those you must have received. He was a fabulous guy with a larger than life personality which we saw in full effect at University events where he brought boisterous conviviality and an irresistible sense of fun. I cannot begin to imagine how hard this is for you all but send you my very best wishes as you celebrate his life and remember his many contributions.

Dear Adrienne, Isaac and family, my most sincere condolences, I am so sorry for your loss.

It's hard to imagine that Peter wont be calling up for a chat next time I'm home, or that Mum and Dad wont have any more stories of his new ventures to share when we speak.

Peter has been part of our extended family for as long as I can remember - just as you all have. He has been present at most of the big moments in my life - and I mean 'present', not just 'there'. Peter laughed and said of course when I asked him to do a magic show at my 21st. He collected me from the airport when I returned to NZ after my adventures living in SE Asia, bought me some essentials and settled me into my new flat. He checked in regularly to make sure I was doing OK. He was at my wedding.

With Adrienne, Peter has been a wonderful friend to my parents, and I am so grateful for the support and laughter he brought to their lives over the years.

Rest in Peace, Peter. Gone far too soon, but you will be long remembered by many.

With much love from Ishbel and family, in Edinburgh UK xxx

Adrienne and extended whanau, I was so saddened to hear this news. Am thinking of you today as you celebrate his life. He will be remembered by many. A warm, witty soul. He was a generous friend who many years ago gave me an interim job when I came back to Palmy from overseas mission - I really appreciated his practical help. Much aroha to you all as you navigate the days ahead.

Dear Adrienne, Isaac, and the extended members of the Cleland and Chrystal families,Our special love to each one of you at this sad time.May you each experience God's love and peace in a deep and special way as we journey on together.
Ou familiy has so many beautiful memories over so many years, most of them centred around CB in one way or another.
I distinctly remember sitting behind Joan and David at Joan at one of the many church concerts we enjoyed together over the years .Joan turned around after yet another item with members of their family or ours performing rediculously and always with much humour and her saying 'Rae, do you ever feel like you want to get under the seat and hide '. Well the answer was very definately Yes, and right now
Thank you Joan,David, Peter,Allen,Barry,Kevin, Daryl, Martin and Joanne

Words can not express in a sentence or two the legacy that Peter leaves. A fabulous role model while being a bundle of fun & mischief! We grew up as the other really large family in PN Central Baptist, later leading the youth group together, & forming the 'Unity Band'. What memories we have to treasure of all the time spent together as young marrieds - One that comes to mind was when Kyla & Susana were preschoolers and tucked down for the night, Peter got out his ventriloquist doll & poked its head through the doorway of their bedroom & scared them witless (you can only imagine the chaos). Another memory is Peter performing magic tricks at Kyla's 21st, & extracting a bra from the most straight laced person at the event. Hilarious, wonderful human - Yes, legendary and a fabulous, genuine friend. Please know that our love & prayers surround you Adrienne & Isaac xxx

The world feels a bit sadder now you're gone, Pete. Your audacious comments and wicked sense of humour will be missed. You always kept in touch, always made the effort. Little did I know that the notification I received from your Apple Watch of a hard fall meant you'd gone to be with Jesus. Hard fall here. Soft landing there. I'll miss you Pete and am so sad for Adrienne and Isaac. Till we meet again.

Condolences to the entire Cleland family for their loss. It has been many years but you never forget such great neighbours that lived for many years next to our family home in Manawatu Street. I remember Peter growing up as a youngster, really nice guy, so sad to hear he has passed. The entire Cleland clan was very close. Mr and Mrs Cleland senior we're often at David and John's who along with their wives lived in homes beside one another. Later on I can remember Gibson and Sandy Cleland arriving. Such a great hard working family. Made a big impression on me.
