I remember Peter Avery as a teacher that showed me both kindness and encouragement while in his form one class. He was also Housemaster for the term my brother and I spent as boarders. I recall him once taking us for a spin around the bays in his green Mini.
After the school years, I only noticed him once at the city auction house and by coincidence, notification of an extensive collection of pottery belonging to Peter being auctioned by the same auction house alerted me to his death.
Just as his teaching helped many youngsters during a formative time of their lives, his collection will disperse to be a part of others lives.

Peter was my teacher for Form 1 at Scotts College in the era that Corporal Punishment was the norm. Without hesitation I can attest to the fact that I was exactly the type of child that tested him to the max and we never saw eye to eye. I still have in my possession a report card that states "I honestly think Stephen was sent to test me". I cannot say it was my best year of school academically, however it was definitely A year that taught me resilience and for that I thank him. standing on my desk with my hands on my head on a Friday was the normal weeks end for me, for those that know I can see the grins on your faces. It takes all types to make this world of ours, and while at the time we were mortal enemies, I have grown to understand our differences and respect him for the person he was. I am only sorry I was unable to shake him by the hand and look him in the eye before he passed.

Peter was my Form 2 teacher many decades ago. I remember him as a firm man who picked clear favourites within his class. That is human nature.
We used to change for "phys ed" in the class in front of Peter. What I could never reconcile and never forgot was why Peter would expound and dispense extra 'house points' to the children that would not wear any underwear when changing into sports clothes. My father's advice was controlled and considered - never remove your underwear in front of this man. I followed my father's advice. Peter never did me any harm and I recall him as a good teacher. As far as I can tell he led a good life. May he rest in peace, but your actions in life define you.

Sorry to only have you as a neighbour for such a short time.
Great chats held at your gate, or across our shared fence - what a talker :)
Wishing your family condolences.

Dear Peter ,he was a collègue and loyal friend to me for over 50 years. He spoke to me a week or two ago little did I know it was a valedictory call.Peter had so many plans for the future and the long custom of living disinclined him to dying..... so many old friends are disappearing that the event to survivors becomes less fearful...to those who remember.farewell Peter or rather fare thee forward

A real gentleman. Went around the Sth Island with Scots College and Peter and Mr Smith way back in the early 90s. I was a parent and nurse on this trip and enjoyed his friendship and humour
RIP Peter. Sandra Harry

An old teacher of mine at Scots. I remember his book reading the best - which helped instill a love of reading in me to this day. Will be missed by many.
