Paul GRAY Obituary

GRAY, Paul Francis (PFG). On Sunday, 22 June 2025, Paul Francis Gray (PFG) died peacefully in Thames; aged 85. Dad was deeply loved by his children Sam, Tasha, and Kezia, and sons-in-law Chris and Cam. He was adored by his grandchildren Harley, Johnny, Liv, Jess, and George. Beloved husband of the late Toni, and cherished brother of John, Ann, Helen (deceased), Natalie, and Gilbert (deceased). Much loved brother-in-law of Judy, Doug (deceased), and Keith. He was the quick-witted and fun uncle of his nieces and nephews, and a loyal friend to those who knew him through the various chapters of his life in Wellington, Mt Eden, and Thames. A poet at heart, Dad was a kaitiaki (guardian) of the trees, the land, and the river that wound through the Kauaeranga Valley, his place of peace and belonging. A celebration of his life will be held at a future time, with details to follow.

I have enjoyed times with Paul since school days (HVHS) and his weekends fishing from Point Howard wharf. Always positive, determined, strong, clever, humble and good-humoured despite a life-long sensitivity for those suffering from 'the essential sadness of life' (PFG), he was a must-see host when I returned from o'seas and found him on the jetty at Kohekohe or in a Mt Eden garden or at 'the valley'. Such occasions make treasured memories.
A sad time for Sam, Natasha, Kezia and all the family.
Love and warm wishes,
-- Peter Vogt
