Patrick WADDINGTON Obituary

WADDINGTON, Patrick Haynes. Emeritus Professor, Victoria University of Wellington On August 10, 2025 at Shona McFarlane Retirement Village; aged 91 years. Dearly loved partner of Kim. Much loved father and father- in-law of Marian and Jean- Phillipe, Emma and Rachid, and Claire. Loved Grandfather of Jonathan, Adrien, Maxim, and Leo. Special thanks to the staff at Te Omanga Hospice and Shona McFarlane for their care. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Forest and Bird online at https://www.forestandbird. org.nz/support-us/appeals/ donate-forest-bird. A service for Patrick will be held in Kingswood, Cnr King and Cairo Street, Upper Hutt on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 2.30pm followed by private cremation. Livestreaming details for those unable to attend are on the tribute page. Messages may be sent to "the Waddington family", C/- PO Box 30 127, Lower Hutt.

Prof Waddington was my HOD and lecturer in Russian culture subjects at VUW in 1987-89. Polished, knowledgeable and a pleasure to know. Always came across as unflappable and distinguished. Very sorry to hear recently of his passing.

DR Waddinton (as he then was) taught an introductory course on Russian lit in translation at Queen' s Belfast in early 70s. Had me hooked for life especially on Turgenev. A very polished lecturer and a true gent. Condolences to family. Remember his daughters as very young girls

Student of Prof Waddington on the late 1970s. Very disciplined and thorough in his teaching. Excellent grounding in coherent development of an argument. Sorry to hear of his passing.
