I was so sorry to hear the sad news today.
I am Mary Friel of Wellington. My late dad was Thomas Greally of Grange, Annaghdown, Galway and I would like to tell you how I am connected to Paddy.
Paddy's mother, Mary, lived with my Dad's family for many years when her parents and brother moved to England. By the time that they returned she had become a very firm member of my Dad's family and stayed on with them. She was called "little" Mary to distinguish her from Dad's sister Maura (Hickey).
When Paddy arrived in New Zealand I was about 5 or 6 years old and I adored him like a brother. He lived with us until he left to get married. He was such a lovely cousin to me and took me to Hurling and many places with his friends. I was so sad when he left Wellington to get married. He always talked about his siblings with great pride. and I was very familiar with their photos. I visited him whenever I went to Auckland but have not seen him for the past 20 years when Jim, my Co.Mayo husband, and I had lunch with him and Shirley. .
I visited Ireland in 1965 when I was just 20 years old. I met his Mum and Dad and I met Gerry and Gabriel but didn't meet his sisters.
I offer Shirley and all of his extended family our sincerest condolences on behalf of my brothers Tom & John (Father Pat and my sister Winifred are no longer with us) and my husband Jim.
I hope that some of you will please take note of my email address and keep in touch with me. I still feel close to my Irish cousins.

Rest In Peace dear uncle Paddy. My first memory of you was your photograph with that unmistakably cheeky grin, in pride of place, down home in Woodquay. It has always seemed that no matter how far away you were; in truth, you were never more than a few inches from view or from our thoughts. You were and are much loved uncle Paddy, and we will all miss you dearly. To David, Claire and Brendan, and Shirley and families, my sincerest sympathy. Love Janai

I still remember the first time Paddy returned home from New Zealand. Mam and Dad were so excited that Mam had told all of the neighbours about his coming, in fact, I should not be surprised if the whole of Galway had heard. So, Paddy, Mam and Dad will be at the gates of heaven, together with St. Peter, to give you, the warmest of welcomes. May you rest in peace. Love. Your sister Margaret and John.
Our deepest sympathy together with our prayers and love to Shirley, David, Claire and Brendan on this sad occasion.

May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead"

My brother Paddy was 11 years older than me. He told me that when I was born that he knocked on every door on the street on Corrib Terrace (where our family lived in Galway) to tell them he had a baby sister as I was the 7th child but first daughter of our mam
