Unravelled
I am unravelled she said
All strung out and can't put myself together
Unravelled like an old cardigan
Coming to bits one stitch at a time
Thin hands restlessly smooth the bed clothes
Picking and pushing Trying to reknit
The intricate weave of her being
Time reflects from star strewn depths
The strands are now aged and thinning with time.
Each babe arrives with bright new threads
dangling from each finger with which to weave a life
The cast on stiches are uneven with tension awry
Bobbly stitches with dropped loops
Creating holes in the fabric with crazy patterns
These track the young years as childhood rushes by
Then bright yellow flowers knitted with care
Show teenage fun and adventurous years
Sedate blue and white, knit on,e pearl one
Adorn the serviceable mother cloak
While bright purple fly-away bits
Float in the air for the empty nest years
And with the aging beauty red fronds dance
Through silver hair framing joyous smiles
I am unravelled she said
Yes Mum I agreed
You no longer need the stories woven into each thread
The lived-in hand washed spun on the line weft
Embracing a life exceedingly well lived
Just hold the end of the thread Mum and let the rest go
We are holding on and feeling each tug
As pieces of our stories are being unravelled
As you begin to weave your next life into being
You are unravelled Mum
And so am I
