Around 1943 Norman was then aged about 17,the apprentice to Oney Cox at Egmont St.Hawera, and the stable star was the Derby winner,Battledress. With the innocence of a 4 or 5 year old I would walk 100 yards from granddad Dick Broughs stable and burst in to the Cox kitchen to interrupt breakfast or lunch to say- Hello Oney can I see your horse please.
Norman would delight in recounting this story whenever he spotted me near the birdcage at Ellerslie in the 1980s or 90s.
He would grab the nearest jockey(one day it was Mark Sweeny)and regale him with his apprentice days memories.
My Dad,Len Clifford, had returned to Hawera after riding in Malaysia in about 1947.Racing was competitive, and Norman and Dad who was about 7 years older, were like cocks fighting to get a mount one morning at trackwork, from Harry Mills I think. This meant that the trackrider would usually earn the raceday mount. They were great rivals.I often saw them ride.My Dad would want me to say-
Norman ,you were a great horseman.
