HN (the way we knew Nihal from our Colombo University days) always had our highest regard not only for being a brilliant academic but also for being a very sincere and simple person the qualities that never deserted him throughout his entire illustrious life.
My deepest sympathies to HN's family at this sad occasion.

Dear Noosha, Chamaya and Others (Palitha, Kolitha and Kapila)
Please accept our family's heartfelt sympathies for the loss of a dear friend - HN; Dil and I have nothing but fond memories of the man; and our children also remember him well as Dad's University friend in glasses that's how they used to refer to him.
We are profoundly saddened by HN's passing away so quickly after the illness; I spoke with him twice in 2014, and he was hopeful of a full recovery, which was not to be.
But, we are consoled by the great times we shared, and the great passion with which we both taught at the Botany Department in the 1980s, and our times together as young Lecturers. He had left the University before the turmoil in 1989 and thereafter; so what I shared with him were good times' at Colombo!
He was indeed an extraordinary man. One, who truly valued humanity, family values, academic values, and the like, and practiced what he preached. Without he himself realising it, he was a tremendous influence on other peoples' lives certainly mine! That is why the two of us were close; although, we did not meet often.
As a senior man, I always took his advice well in Departmental matters; he was the calmest amongst us; and I dragged him into Student Counselling, stopping ragging' at the University, which were experiences we shared for more than 3 years.
I have wonderful memories of our meals and drinks together (we were all very poor then), chats, teasing each other on many issues, sharing jokes times we both cherished. I remember the conversations well, including various words of wisdom' from his cool head.
HN always looked after' the interests of others primarily, his student and colleagues in the Department, which he served so well until he departed in late-1980s.
During his tenure as Head/Botany', he agonised over the right thing to do always, and did everything that was expected of him. And, he had incredible capacity to balance' the arguments and extract the good from various protagonists (and sometimes, antagonists) within the Department. I remember colourful incidents and petty squabbles, which he helped douse with his logical approach.
All in all, my life was enlightened by him; his demeanour, generosity, temperament, manners, and general disposition. Our family loved and respected him.
We will remember him forever, and we hope that Noosha, Chamaya and the rest of the family will find solace and happiness in these memories of a wonderful man.
