Kia Ora Rosie and family, I was so sad to hear of the passing of Nick. I will never forget the lovely evening we had over dinner in your Akaroa home, with Nick, Liane Dalziel and myself, spontaneously breaking into a Beatles song together, down our end of the table, pre dinner, chuffed with our harmonious blending! It was a happy coincidence to see you both out on your morning walk together the following day. Nick shared he and I might have an ancestral connection, on my father's side and I thought that would be an honour for me if that was so. This next stage of life will be a massive adjustment for you and my warmest wishes go out to you. Love Angela Tainui

Dear Rosie
Sincere condolences to you and family on Nick's passing.
Fond memories of Young Hunter in the late 70s with Nick holding court as we crammed around the morning tea trolley. He was a wonderful friend and colleague to a young lawyer finding his feet, always an open door if there was a problem to share.
I'll remember him as a sunny man, an enthusiast for life and for living.

To Rosie and Family
It was with great sadness that we learnt of Nick´s sudden death.
Our memories of Nick extend back to our days at Waimataitai School in Timaru and to more recently when we held a class reunion in Timaru in2018. Some classmates went on to secondary school with Nick and also shared sporting interests with him. Even after all those years he was so easy to talk to and learn about his interesting and busy life and family.
He was so well respected and will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
Please accept our deepest sympathy.
From all his classmates in Standard 2 Waimataitai School 1957

Our deepest sympathy goes out to you all at this very sad time. As we read the tributes from others, we note the same feelings are expressed, Nick's warmth, kindness and compassion shine through. Nick had a way of making one feel special, he was so generous of his time. He was so well respected in all walks of life; he is going to be missed by everyone who was lucky to know him.

As Guy noted, the South Island high country farming community THANK Nick for his skill and efforts in achieving fair rentals for Pastoral Lease and Licence holders. His ability to carefully articulate well-considered points (gently but firmly) was special. His vocabulary and professionalism made him a special kiwi. Not one to beat his own drum, Nick has set a standard that all legal professionals Within New Zealand would do well to follow.

Ohh Rosie and family, such sad news, my heart goes out to you all. Such fond memories of our times together at CH, flatting together, playing cricket together for the university team, and the occasional game of golf together. And then later on over the years, on Mavi and my returns to NZ we would discover that Nick, the respected and successful man of law, was essentially the same kind, charming, thoughtful, amusing and forever young guy from his early days. He made people feel special, and was so loyal to his friends. His spirit will continue to enrich your lives I am sure.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Nick's passing. For such an esteemed judge, he was never judgmental in his care and concern for others and his legacy will surely be one of sincerity, kindness, extraordinary intellect and equally enormous compassion. We offer our love and thoughts to Rosie and her whanau at this time of immense loss. Kua hinga te totara i te wao nui a Tane, the forest has lost another of its finest totara and a steadfast friend and mentor is now at rest.
