Stewart and Maureen Rutledge
April 9, 2026
This is a special message for Maureen, after all these years, from Stew and Maureen Rutledge, still in Auckland. We two have just spent time today with Alison (that was Hodder) and Dick Denyer, both former top Chemistry students. It was they who mentioned that they had read of Murray's passing this year. They also reminded us that Murray was in Alison's Stage 3 Chemistry year all that time ago. We were deeply saddened to think that Murray is no longer with us, such are our memories of both Murray and Maureen. Stew (now in his 90th year!) remembers him as being a very fine student, highly motivated and achieving. We both remember him as a very welcoming human being, lots of fun, extremely good on the guitar, and embracing life in all its forms. We went to Murray's lively 21st birthday party in Thames all those years ago, we got together subsequently with them both in Auckland and we once visited them at their cottage by the sea. A fine couple, and as the obituary says, Murray was clearly a family man to be proud of in so many different ways. Bless him

Maureen and Trebilcock family, our sincere condolences on Murrays passing and struggle with health. Fond memories of our youth together, flatting in Auckland, footy games, social ... very social!, we were great mates and experienced lasting memories. Always remembered and appreciated as a true friend. Ian Casey (Australia)

I knew Murray as a NZFP cadet, Kinleith laboratory colleague and supervisor. In 1975 he was my best man at our wedding in Rotorua. Our paths separated when Murray took up a position in Rangiora.
Murray has a special place in my memories of 30 years at Kinleith, as a genuine colleague and as a fair and empathetic supervisor.
Unfortunately, on Friday we are travelling to fulfill a prior committment in Whanganui, so we can only be with you online. Ray and Rosemary

I knew Murray when we were both in graduate school at the University of Auckland in 1970. There were 4 "kids" in the Masters programme in the Dept of Chemistry that year who stood out above the rest of us. Murray was one of the four and truly brilliant. He was a great person to be around, with a wonderful personality. We chose different paths after that, but I will remember him as one of the best people I have known.
