Mike loved his sons very dearly and always spoke proudly of all three of them. I met him and spent time with him in his final few months of life. He encouraged me to learn about keeping good health, to play the ukelele, to sing and to sail; positively impacting my life forever. The most memorable wisdom he gifted to me was that "love is the most important part of life." A honor to have met this kind, charming and humorous man. In remembrance of Mike's passing 1 year ago today.

I first met Mike over 60 years ago when I was a kid on my dad's launch the Manuroa on our summer cruise of Great Barrier,we teamed up with the Websters on the Alcyone along with the Brakes on the Seaway Fare, the Burrells on the Tangaroa and Marmonts on the Siesta.Alcyone was much faster than the old Gardner powered Manuroa.l well remember Mike sailing the varnished clinker sailing dinghy,he took my admiration as he was so good at it also I well remember us all being around a big fire on the beach on New year's eve1962 and how good he was at playing the guitar and the song of the time Michael rowed the boat ashore. I also remember his wonderful kind parents.l think his dad's name was Aub, also he had a sister called Jackie and she was a stunner.l have never left the sea either Mark Alloway yacht Tere Manu Whitianga

I met Mike in 1982 at the Russell Boating Club's "Tall Ships Race" and assisted as tactician on "Windrose" resulting in a trophy win by eight seconds. We repeated that win the following year in '83.
Such fun being around Mike with his infectious love of life and sailing. Also, many fun music jams with our guitars and singing. Mike had a folder of silly songs which kept us all laughing.
I'll miss you heaps.
Sail on in fair breezes Mike.
