I met Michael through soccer when I was coach for Eastern Suburbs. Michael and Joan organized the subscriptions and I also assisted. We played soccer togethre for many years - well into our 70's and Joan and Michael were always our guests at anniversaries, birthdays, New Year functions etc and also as dning partners.
I will miss my ftriend.

Michael (and Joan) taught me as an undergraduate. I remember well his laconic lecturing style, and the way he employed it to share his compendious and detailed knowledge, particularly - but not exclusively - in matters marine. Later, we were to become work colleagues and I count myself lucky to have been able to enjoy his friendship on something other than a student-lecturer basis. Michael was softly spoken and a real gentleman of a school now sadly almost passed. He was both an artist and a scientist, and with his infectious grin he had a capacity to draw on his extensive memory to fill in the blanks in our own knowledge, whether in science, politics or other spheres. If ever there was a time for a glass of Taittinger it is now: Cheers, Michael. You will be forever in my memory.

Dear Hugo and Michael's entire family,
I worked with Michael and Joan at University for many Years. They welcomed me almost as family for which I will be forever grateful. They were both friends and Colleagues always warm, caring and supportive. Michael was the loveliest of men and among the last of the great UoA academics of his generation. I remember one student, overawed at the breadth of Michael's knowledge saying
" Michael Miller just knows too much".
We will not see his like again.
With deepest condolences and warmest regards
