A great teacher and later friend to me and my sons. Sincerest condolences to Mary, Stephen and Elizabeth. He will always be remembered as an outstanding exemplar of the best sort of teacher among many fine colleagues at AGS.

I can still recite the verb conjugations I learned in Mr. Farrell's 3rd Form Latin class 23 years ago. I have learned three foreign languages since and his teachings of the basics of language stood me in excellent stead, as well as his sense of linguistic fun ("Caesar ad sum iam forte, Brutus ad erat").

Mike Farrell was an outstandingly noble and hard-working pillar of society. We were together at Richmond Road School and at Mount Albert Grammar School, and came together again in teaching at Auckland Grammar School. I was greatly honoured when Mike invited me to join his 2001 AGS World Heritage Tour, which gave me ever-lasting memories of Mike leading the charge around Rome, Washington, and elsewhere. Dearest Michael, thanks for the memories of a true classics icon in Auckland education. Highest Regards Always, Jim Carlyle.
