Firstly I offer my condolences to the family on the death of Michael. I attended Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt where I met a girl with the name of Thecla Behrens and I am wondering if she could be a sister to Michael. If that be the case it would be nice to touch base with her. Regards Dorothy Johnstone (nee Little).

Sincere sympathy to the Behrens family and gratitude for Mike's life. He was a caring, just man who seemed able to walk in the shoes of others and his compassion was always evident. We were grateful to chat with him before the PN hikoi not so long ago - always striving for justice, even towards the end. Thanks for touching our lives, Mike.

Sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I knew Mike at his time with Massey AFC & Manawatu AFC & his guidance was invaluable when assembled the bid for the YoungHeart Manawatu franchise, for which Anthony designed the logo.

Deepest condolences Anthony Fiona, Ann and family. I've known Mike my whole life. He was my neighbour growing up and I first knew him as Mr Behrens, Anthony and the late Janes dad. During a different chapter of our lives we would frequent the same coffee spots and bump into each around town often, we would say a quick hello in passing or stop for a chat. Last year Mike came to stay at the rest home I worked at so we got reacquainted during yet another chapter of our lives. Mike was a well respected lawyer and judge and a really lovely guy in general. He will be truely missed.
RIP Mike

Mike was a good brother to me, his twin, and to our two sisters. Although Mike and I have lived far away from each other for many years, we have always enjoyed chats and jokes on phone or by email. Thinking of you today, Mike, and always. Gerardine and brother-in-law Alan Henning.

A gentleman with a wry sense of humour, who I met on my first day on being appointed to be a Referee at Palmerston North Courthouse. We were both standing waiting for the registrar to serve us, and M. Behrens Q.C. asked me what was i there for. I told him of my appointment, about which I was pretty nervous, and he said, "You are the sort of person they need." I felt serious pride, thinking as a woman, that was what he meant. I said "Thank You, but what do you mean?" He said, " You wear sensible shoes." !!! I have giggled about that for years. Thank you Mike, for making me feel as if i really belonged in that foreign space of a Courthouse. R.I.P. iola calkin then, now haggarty

Great memories of Mike at the long-established Palmerston Cricket Club in 1970s. At committee meets he was a staunch supporter against a proposed, devastating amalgamation as the club subsequently recovered back to first grade status. A character with his (then) flowing locks and beard backing up his determined medium-pace bowling. Thanks for the camaraderie old friend.

To the Behrens whanau.
I have great memories of Jane, Kathryn (Westwood) and I playing together as kids.
Then a few years later, meeting with Mr Behrens with my Mum (Annette), who was trying to convince me into law and not Social Work. He was stunning in discussing the importance of both professions and in the end Mum was happily accepting my choice.
Then low and behold Mr Behrens then became Mike, as my Law Lecturer in my Bachelor of Social Work. His wit, ability to discuss and challenge without fear, and his incredible understanding and support of people with less opportunities. Awesome!
I remember all your whanau with love, laughter and support. So my heart goes out to you now.

Kia ora koutou Behrens family, and I was very sorry to hear of your loss of Mike. He was a very good friend to my family and will be much missed. We sang together in Angela's choir; he was always a very ready listener. Among the qualities that stood out for me were his humour, his wit, his pleasure in life, and his self-effacing nature. He was very focused on justice, which you'd expect from someone who served the law for the greater part of his life, but he had a close interest in seeing that the humane, right and just outcome occurred.
