I was a colleague of Merv during the 1960s at Grammar. I remember his bustling energy, good humour, and his willingness to go the extra mile with pupils. We shared a love of cricket and our Christian faith. Many students will remember him fondly. My thoughts are with Joyce and family

It was odd; I was just thinking of him the other day. At age 70 I started re-learning French and thought I had Merv to thank for my continued interest. He was a great teacher and he had a genuine interest in his students, whom he treated with an affection and a respect that not all the other teachers did. I realize now what I owe him. My thoughts are with his family

Sorry to hear of Merv's passing. I knew him as a French teacher and later a colleague. Merv's humanity and sincerity are the qualities I remember most. Condolences to the family.

A great teacher and one of life´s true characters, Merv gave so much to everyone around him, with his enthusiasm, energy, humour, empathy and intelligence. He was a valued friend and mentor to my father Ferg, and a significant influence to me growing up as a young member of the Ellerslie Presbyterian congregation and then again at Auckland Grammar, where he was already legendary to pupils there in the mid 1980s. Our thoughts go out to the Joyce and the Fairgray family in this time of loss.
