Merimeri Penfold
Auckland Girls' Grammar School mourns the passing of Meri Meri Penfold. She was a remarkable New Zealander who has made a significant contribution to human rights and to education in NZ, particularly to the teaching and learning of Te Reo.
Merimeri came to Auckland Girls' Grammar School from Queen Victoria School in the late 1930s. In 2002 she returned to AGGS when we honoured her as one of our ‘significant old girls' at our Founding Day Assembly. We like to think that some of the ideals and values by which she lived were inspired by her time at our school. Rest in peace, rest in love.

He wahine miharo, he toki pounamu, he kaiwhakatutu hoki mo nga take tangata, mo nga take matauranga, mo te whakaako i te Reo Maori i Aotearoa.

Kua ea!
The University Library and its staff would like to send their condolences to the family at the passing of such a great woman. Merimeri provided the korero for the ingoa Maori and it is with sadness that we are unable to attend due to many other commitments at this time of year with students. As always she played a major role over her many years at the University and after she left, she will be missed by the multitudes.
