GASTON--Meredith Michelle Mason Cooper, 35, of Gaston, SC, after a courageous triple negative breast cancer battle since 2007, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, January 14, 2011.

Michelle was married to David B. Cooper on May 28, 2005, at Rocky Grove Baptist Church, Salley, SC. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1993 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from The University of South Carolina in 1998. She was employed by Jim Hudson Toyota as Client Relations Manager for 5 years where she earned Outstanding Performance and Excellence Award for 4 consecutive years. Michelle was a member at Shandon Baptist Church and for many years prior to that was a member at Lexington Presbyterian Church. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 Michelle faithfully prayed for and encouraged other people battling cancer as she herself underwent chemo, surgery and radiation. Most important to Michelle was her relationship to her Lord Jesus Christ, her family and friends and her kitties.

Cooper, her father Richard Mike Mason of West Columbia, her mother and S-Dad – Berta and Allen Puckhaber of Charleston/Folly Beach, her brother and sister-in-law – Richard Mark and Lisa Mason of Moncks Corner, her niece Taylor Mason and her mother Tina Mason of Hanahan, as well as many other Aunts, uncles, cousins and her two kitties Meesha and Gracie whom she loved dearly.

Visitation will be held Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Thompson Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC from 5 to 7 pm. Homegoing Celebration will be held Monday, January 17, 2011 at Shandon Baptist Church, 5250 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC at 12 Noon. Interment following at Rocky Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Salley, SC.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to “MICHELLE MASON COOPER MEDICAL FUND” 1872 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412.

The family forever thanks all who have encouraged Michelle and David throughout her breast cancer journey. A special thanks to Dr. Stephen Madden and his wonderful staff, as well as the oncology nurses and techs at Lexington Medical Center.

I wish to express my gratitude for and the benefit of my having known Michelle.

We first met at the Jim Hudson Toyota Dealership where Michelle served as Client Relations Manager representing the business and meeting the needs of the Clients. A difficult job at times, she confided, but a job that suited her
and that she accomplished brilliantly
because she was gifted with a servants heart.

As her Chaplain, I would visit with her during my weekly rounds at this dealership. It was not long bfore I became quickly aware that I was in the presence of someone very special:
She was as lovely as a desert flower,
She was bright as an early morning ray of sunlight, She was as comforting as a breath of fresh air.

She was all these things and more:

She was a devoted and loving young woman:

She was dedicated to and loved her family.
She was devoted to her Husband David, whom she loved deeply and dearly.
She was dedicated to and very much loved Her Mother, Berta,Her Father, Mike, Her brother, Mark, Her step-Father, Allen, Her entire family – each and everyone of you.
She loved her four-legged children – Meesha and Gracie and I know she would wish that we would mention Q-Tip.

She was fully committed to and very much loved her Employer: Jim Hudson and his dear wife Sybil. She was dedicated to all she served at her work
both customers and fellow associates.

She was dedicated to many, even some she did not know: woman in prison,
others struggling against cancer, and
of course the list goes on….

Where ever there were the lost
Where ever there were the hurting
There her heart would also be.
She was devoted and loving to all these and more;
I know she was because she told me of her love for you and how she prayed for each you, continually; and she entrusted me to pray for you also.

Do you see? Have you heard?
Michelle was other oriented:

She was like a beacon from a light
house shining for all to see,
We were drawn to her like ships seeking safe harbor.
She was like a bit like a mother hen, always keeping track of our lives
discovering our concerns and our needs
always encouraging us, always praying for us.

Regardless of her responsibilities
She always made herself available to all who were tired, weary, in need.

She loved openly and freely,
She offered grace and compassion,
mercy and counsel, aid and comfort to all…

What makes Michelle so special?

Michelle is a child of God.

She would tell us that she’s not special but we would know better...

She would tell us that if we saw something special in her it would be God’s doing... and she would be right.

She continually sought to understand God more, to draw nearer to Him, to hear Him better, to be like her Savior,
and her Lord, Jesus Christ.

She was my friend
She was my Sister-in-Christ
Just as she was for many of you.

As I sought to encourage her,
she often encouraged me.
Just as she did many of you.

Jesus himself explains why
Meredith Michelle Mason Cooper
was so very special to us and to Him:

Jesus said:
“ I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk
in darkness, but will have the
light of life.” (John 8:12)

Michelle had the light of Jesus Christ; Michelle had the love of God for all humanity emanating from her.

Jesus also said:
“You are the light of the world.
A town built on a hill cannot be
hidden. Neither do people light a
lamp and put it under a bowl.
Instead they put it on its stand,
and it gives light to everyone...”
(Matthew 5:14 -15)

Jesus said these words to his disciples
as he taught them how to live out their faith.

Michelle had heard these words and she took them to her heart. She did successfully what most of us attempt a
lifetime to accomplish. She applied Jesus words words to her life.

Michelle was fully dedicated to her Savior, Jesus Christ:
She followed his teaching.
She wanted people to know about
her Lord and Savior.

She wanted to be His Light and
His Love to a hurting world.

She followed another of Jesus his
commandments given in Matthew
Chapter 22:
In response to a question,
What is the greatest Command of God?
37 Jesus replied:
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 And the second is like it:
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Michelle defined “neighbor” the Way Jesus defined neighbor:
“Everyone”

Now, I close with this offering from God’s Word for our comfort for it provides the Eternal Hope that Michelle is now living.

A passage of Scripture which Michelle and I we shared many times.

Scripture: 1 John 4:7-12

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who has been born of God knows God… (v7)
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another… (9-11). If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us;(v15-16a). God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God and God in him. In this way love is made complete among us…There is no fear in love…perfect love drives out fear…(v16b-18.)

God wants us to know that for as much as we all love Michelle; He loves her even more than we can imagine.

God wants us to know that being in his presence is a greater pleasure than we could ever hope to experience in this life.

God wants us to know that we are all here for His purpose and that Michelle fulfilled His purpose for her brilliantly.

God wants us to know that Michelle abides with Him and that we can abide with them, all we have to do is embrace His Son, Jesus Christ,
as He has embraced our Michelle.

This is the Michelle we came to know:

A beautiful young devoted woman
reflecting the light and love
of God the Father and His Son
in a lost and hurting world.

Finally I wish to say to David and Berta, thank you both for sharing Michelle’s love with so very many people and for that we are all
forever grateful.

I believe God sends angels to Earth to guide us. I can not explain you any other way than to say God made you special. He made you an angel. Logan asked me what color your wings were up in heaven. I said pink and sparkling. My precious friend. Always there when I need an shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, advice to trust, and love without boundaries. Dealing with your loss seems impossible since you were the person I would go to for support through these times. I still find it hard that you are not a phone call or text away. Just today I had a situation where I wished for your input. I think back to all the years of great dances, pork and beans with Kraft Mac N Cheese between classes, hair dying experiments, frogs we had to kiss to find our princes, and therapeutic lunches picking things off each others plates. I miss you so, but I still see you wherever I go for you are always on my mind. You will forever be in my heart. I Love you!

Michelle was a fighter through this, and never gave up, but gave all she had. She had a loving husband, who was there, and showed the world what a true man, and husband is, through this rough time in their young lives. I am sad by the loss of a family member, but I am at peace, that she is no longer hurting. She will always be a part of all our lives that shes touched, and her spirt will live on forever in our hearts, and in the memories she has left behind. I Love You!

There are no words to adequately convey the tremendous impact Michelle had on my life and the lives of many, many others. From her sweet smile and thoughtful cards to her hugs and listening ear, she was the kindest, yet toughest woman I have ever met. The grace and strength with which she fought her cancer battle are a true testament to her faith and as well as to what a tremendously courageous woman she was. Thank you, my dear friend for teaching me so many life lessons about compassion, love and friendship. May your spirit soar now that you are no longer burdened by an earthly body and know that those left behind will be honored to continue teaching the lessons you so artfully passed on to us. You are still touching lives, sweet Chel.

David, Berta, Taylor and all of Michelle’s family and friends will remain in my prayers as you mourn the loss of such a beautiful soul; for while we rejoice that she is pain free and in heaven, it will take time to adjust to our earthly angel’s transformation into an angel above us.

I met Michelle very briefly - too briefly - when she was an attendant in my son and daughter-in-law's wedding. I immediately fell in love with her. Not only was she so very beautiful to look at, but her spirit, her personality, her caring were even more beautiful. I certainly wish circumstances had allowed me to spend more time with her and to get to know her better. My daughter-in-law has kept me up-to-date on Michelle's harrowing battle with cancer. I, and many in my church, had been praying for a miracle. I'm so glad that Michelle knew that God always knows best. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. What a loss for them! I hope that God will heal that emptiness you feel and bring you comfort in the many wonderful memories you have of your time with her and of knowing that, as fellow Christians, we will see her again someday.

This bright and shining flame shows the light that was always shining through Michelle's eyes. Her love of the Lord, her kind spirit, her compassion, her loyalty, her strength, and her true committment to living a Christian life will be what I remember most about Michelle. I always thought of her as the epitome of a true Southern Belle, and will always be grateful for the friendship she extended to me when I first moved to South Carolina. I miss you Michelle, and I'm happy that you're finally free to be yourself again, in the comfort of our Lords embrace.

I have been praying for Michelle and her family since 2009. I did not know her personally. I, too, was diagnosed in 2009 with breast cancer. My Dr. was also Dr. Madden. I know some of the thoughts and feelings she must have had. I know that the illness brought me closer to God and helped me conquer my fear of death. I know that God answered prayers in both our lives. God wanted to take Michelle now. I pray for your peace and happiness until you see Michelle again. Betty

I wrote this two years ago when Michelle so graciously volunteered to give her Christian testimony at my church. It means even more to me now. I will never forget you, my dear sweet friend. You have been and will continue to be the biggest inspiration of my life. I love you.

"Having a professional background in business usually dominated my men (construction and the car business), one becomes rather “hardened” to daily life and circumstances. Michelle and I know each other from the dealership. At first, we would wave and exchange pleasantries from time to time. Then the storm hit in my life. My marriage was in shambles, my relationship with my son disintegrated to non-existent, and my relationship with my daughter hung like a black cloud over my head. Michelle sensed that I was in turmoil. She witnessed to me about God’s goodness and grace. Keep in mind that I already knew this, but was fighting it because I was very angry at God for the things going on in my life. I gave up church. I would not pray. I would not call out to Him for help. I wouldn’t even say my blessing because “I didn’t have to”. I justified it to myself by saying “God knows I’m mad at him”. What made me think He would be OK with that?

Michelle was relentless, both in direct and indirect ways. She became a sounding board for me. She took my burden. Finally, after many months, I bowed my heart to God again. I have Michelle to thank for that. She won me back for Christ.

The happy ending- my marriage has been healed and is guided by the goodness of Christ. I have my daughter back. And my son and I are speaking after 2 years of bitter silence.

Her diagnosis came shortly after that. My friend needed ME now. How could I possibly be as strong for her as she was for me? How could I possibly live up what God expected of me? Well, the gentleness, understanding, love, faith, kindness, unselfishness that she taught me over the prior year shone through. I hope that I was all for her as she was for me.

She, by example, has made me a better person today than I was yesterday.

I love you Michelle."

I have never met a person who carried the love of Christ so deeply than Michelle. During her trials she still kept a peace that surpassed all understanding. Only our Heavenly Father can provide that peace.
Michelle demonstrated what it meant to be a true Woman of God as described in Proverbs 31. Michelle, I thank you for setting the example of what it means to be "sold-out" for Christ. Thank you for your strength, inspiration, love, and undying faith that you portrayed to us your friends and your family. Rest in peace in the grip of Our Lord and Savior and praise His name, as we here on earth celebrate your journey home. My condolences and prayers go out to David and Mason/Cooper families.

Michelle, You will be greatly missed! Your strength, and encouragement were so great! You touched many, many people along your journey. You fought harder, when most people would have given up. The one thing that I always remebered about you was your beautiful smile. Even when we were all in school, your smile was the one thing I remembered about you. It was always so sincere. You smiled when most would have cried, and I know it's because of your faith in God. Your faith in God has been amazing, and I know that's what carried you through this journey on the last few years. I know you are singing and dancing with our Lord, pain free, and cancer free! I know you are surrounded with all of the most beautiful flowers imaginable! I will not say goodbye, instead, until we meet again, all of my love, your sister in christ, Chas
I plan to continue to pray for peace and comfort for all of the family and friends, at 12 everyday, and all throughout the day and night. Much peace and Love to you all! Chas
